Jet Dark back to defend Champions Cup

Jack Milner The winners of last year’s Grade 1 Champions Cup and Mercury Sprint, as well as the Grade 3 Marshalls World Of Sport Gold Cup, have all been nominated to defend their titles at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday 30 July. Jet Dark won the Champions Cup over 1800m, and he has been joined by eight other entries, which includes Kommetdieding, Linebacker, Al Muthana, MK’s Pride and Astrix. The Mercury Sprint over 1200m is always a competitive race and 33 runners have been nominated for this race in an attempt to stop Pearl Of Asia from doing the double. The Gold Cup was won by Sean Tarry-trained Nebraas, who was the top stayer last season, and defence of his title is definitely on his agenda. There are some decent challengers for him his year, including stablemate Black Thorn, Grade 1 SA Derby winner Aragosta, impressive Vodacom 2200 champion One Way Traffic and Shangani, who beat Nebraas at Turffontein on 3 July. Also run on the day are the Grade 1 Premiers Champion Stakes and Thekwini Stakes over 1600m and Umkhomazi Stakes and The Debutante over 1200m, all for two-year-olds. Supplementary entries close on Tuesday 19 July with declarations on Thursday 21 July.
