Spy on Smith at Fairview

Gavin Smith has some really decent three-year-olds in his yard and Forest Spy can rack up another win for the yard when he lines up in Race 8 at Fairview on Friday, a MR 88 Handicap over 1000m on the turf.

As a two-year-old, one can argue Forest Spy ranked up there with the likes of some other top juveniles in Smith’s yard such as Cruise Control and Khaya’s Hope.

Forest Spy showed signs of inexperience when only third on debut but the winner that day, Holly's View, shows promise while Forest Spy was quick to pull off two smart wins after that.

Both of his wins were over the minimum trip and that is where he finds himself again after a decent third last time over 1400m behind Port Louis.

Khaya's Hope was a couple of lengths ahead of him that day but there was not much between those two rivals as juveniles, and it was Khaya's Hope who impressed last week with a runaway victory.

Forest Spy could have bigger fish to fry in two weeks’ time as he has been nominated to run in a Pinnacle Stake over 1100m on the R350,000 Algoa Cup (Listed) card. It is bound to be a strong race as also among the entries are stablemate Cruise Control, Fly My Flag, Evies First, as well as Alan Greeff-trained Cliff Top and Whatever Next.

Promising Holly's View may have just needed her comeback run last month when finding speedy Princess Deb’s a touch better on the day.

The Global View filly has always looked likely to need further to be seen at her very best and the 1600m she runs in Race 5 should suit her nicely.

Whatever she does in this race you can virtually guarantee her merit rating will rise in the next few months.
