CLUB SOCCER IS BACK AND THERE’S A CARRYOVER SOCCER 13 Big-gun club soccer is back on the menu after the international break and TAB soccer customers have a grand weekend ahead of them with a smashing combination of good football and great chances to win, notably tomorrow’s cash-boosted Soccer 10 and a carryover Soccer 13 on Sunday. COUNT ON THE CUP KINGS IN ORLANDO CLASH WITH MAGESI Locally, it’s the start of the Carling Knockout Cup for PSL teams with the eight first-round matches from this Friday through Sunday. The bulk of the games are on Saturday with two of them in the R100,000-added Soccer 10 and another three in the last Soccer 10 of the day. Newly-crowned MTN8 champions Orlando Pirates start favourites for the Carling Cup. They don’t have the depth to match the firepower of Sundowns across a league season, but they can teach the champs a thing or two in knockout competitions. Remarkably, Pirates have won five of the last six domestic cup competitions with their only failure coming in last year’s Carling Cup, in which they were dumped out on penalties in the quarter-finals by Richards Bay. They take on newly-promoted Magesi in Orlando on Saturday afternoon and should be a safe banker to win in the Soccer 10, barring a dramatic loss of form. Other bankers in the Soccer 10, which should total close to R2 million thanks to the cash boost from TAB, include Polokwane to win at home against Marumo Gallants and home wins for Newcastle in the English Premier League and Osasuna in LaLiga. The most-watched game in the pool is likely to be the Manchester United-Brentford clash at Old Trafford. And most won’t be watching because of the quality of the football, but rather to see whether United head coach Erik ten Hag can keep his job. Should Brentford put United to the sword in their own backyard, it’s likely Ten Hag will get the boot unless frugal Sir Jim Ratcliffe decides it’s just too expensive to terminate his contract. Ironically, Brentford boss Thomas Frank in the leading contender to replace Ten Hag. The last Soccer 10 on Saturday has a glut of stand-out bankers - home wins for AC Milan, Sundowns, Bayern Munich, Girona and Cape Town City plus Arsenal to win away at Bournemouth. Not so easy to call is the clash between trophy-hungry teams SuperSport United and Kaizer Chiefs in Polokwane on Saturday night. But Amakhosi are on the upgrade and could have the edge. Bankers to win for Sunday’s carryover Soccer 13 are Liverpool, Manchester City, Barcelona and Villarreal.
