WEEKEND SOCCER HIGHLIGHTS: 10 - 12 Jan 2025

BIG CASH BOOSTS FOR THREE POOLS THIS WEEKEND Get set for several opportunities to win big cash on TAB soccer pools this weekend. Three pools get cash boosts totalling R550,000 from TAB, there’s a R16.5-million guaranteed Soccer 13 pool in the event of only one all-13-correct winner and many pools have a challenging combination of matches. FA CUP HOLDERS FACE AN EARLY EXIT THIS TIME ROUND The third round of the famous FA Cup in England is underway and there are cup matches aplenty in TAB soccer pools this weekend, including several fascinating clashes between teams from different divisions. Tonight, Wycombe Wanderers, currently joint second with Wrexham in League One, are at home to English Championship club Portsmouth and many will fancy the home side to come out tops, despite being pitted against a team from a higher league. Portsmouth won promotion from League One last season, but are struggling this term and currently sit near the bottom of the Championship log. Then on Saturday there’s a similar clash with Leyton Orient, currently in eighth place in League One, pitted against Championship outfit Derby, who are battling and have lost four of their last five games. Derby are 16-10 favourites, but Leyton have won five in a row and can extend their winning sequence. The highlight of the FA Cup clashes comes on Sunday, when Manchester United begin their defence of the trophy. Unfortunately for United, it’s as challenging a third-round tie as you can get - a trip to the Emirates Stadium in London to face Arsenal, who have won the FA Cup a record 14 times. United stunned Manchester City to lift the FA Cup for the 13th time last year, but there’s much water under the bridge since then and the Red Devils are only 13th in the league and could easily fall into relegation territory. Arsenal are 10-13 favourites and should win, although it might be a tougher game than many expect given United's capability to raise their game against better teams, as they did when holding Liverpool last weekend. At home Orlando Pirates host Algeria's CR Belouizdad on Sunday, knowing a win will seal their place in knockout stages of the CAF Champions League for the first time since 2013. Pirates are coming off a disappointing 1-0 Betway Premiership loss to Cape Town City, but should have enough to take down Belouizdad for the second time, having already beaten them 2-1 in Algeria. Make them a banker to win in all your permutations.
