There’s great soccer action in several countries to bet on through the weekend, but locally all eyes will be on the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup, which feature the three big names in South African football.
Both cup matches are being played on Sunday to give Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates maximum time to recover from successful midweek exertions in African Champions League quarter-final second legs.
Sundowns held Esperance to a goalless stalemate in Tunisia on Tuesday night, giving them a 1-0 aggregate win and a semi-final clash with Egyptian giants Al Ahly, and are back home to host Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup semis.
Pirates are also through to the ACL semis after a goalless encounter at home against MC Alger on Wednesday night and take on Marumo Gallants in the first of the semis on Sunday at the Orlando Stadium.
Barring flat performances, both Pirates and Sundowns look obvious bankers to win, which will set up a repeat of last season’s Nedbank Cup final between the current holders and the league champions - and hopefully another repeat in the ACL final!
Sundowns and Chiefs meet for the fourth time in all competitions this season, with the Brazilians victorious in the first three. They won the league matches 2-1 and 1-0, and also claimed a handsome 4-0 success in the Carling Knockout. In fact, Sundowns have not lost any of their last 12 meetings with Chiefs in a run dating back to 2021 that includes nine victories.
To that you can add that Sundowns currently head the Betway Premiership table with nearly double the points amassed by Chiefs, so statistically there’s nothing to suggest Amakhosi have a significant chance of winning.
Pirates and Gallants have met twice in the league this campaign and the games could not have been more different. The Soweto side romped to an 8-1 success at home and became the first team in PSL history to score seven goals in a single half of league football. But in the return fixture in Bloemfontein in March, Gallants emerged 2-0 winners.
Pirates are the cup kings though and have only lost one home tie in the competition since 2008. So even taking into account the unpredictability of knockout football, it will be a major shock if Pirates and Sundowns are not the finalists in the Nedbank Cup.
Sunday’s big Soccer 13 comprises top-tier matches from five countries including four English Premier League clashes. Home wins for Liverpool, Newcastle and Chelsea look potential banker bets, as does Fiorentina at home to Parma in a Italian Serie A game in Florence. Parma are struggling to stay above the relegation zone and have won only one of their last 10 games.
Home wins for Athletic Bilbao against Rayo Vallecano in LaLiga and Sirius against Brommapojkama (no win against Sirius since 2015) in an Allsvenskan match are other bankers to consider.
