Sunday is Guy Fawkes Day and there undoubtedly will be plenty of fireworks at Fairview Racecourse for the running of the Listed Jonsson Workwear Algoa Cup over 2000m on the turf track.
This is the second meeting of a two-day festival of racing in the Eastern Cape, and to add some impetus to the day there is a R500,000 Pick 6 carryover to Sunday’s meeting with the pool likely to reach R3 million.
As is so often the case with these two meetings, they have attracted some strong attention from Western Cape trainers and once again, to the chagrin of local racing fans, the spoils look likely to leave the province.
Brett Crawford on Friday already lifted the Listed Racing Owners Association Stakes over 1600m with Zoomie, who thwarted Alan Greeff-trained Fairy Knight by a neck.
Crawford, Justin Snaith and Glen Kotzen have runners in Sunday’s Algoa Cup and unless Greeff can pull something out of the fire with Grazinginthegrass, who is looking for his seventh successive victory, the raiders will be hard to peg back.
Kotzen has three runners, including last year’s winner Han Solo. The seven-year-old gelding could pull off the double but jockey Raymond Danielson will need to overcome No 14 draw.
Crawford saddles The Futurist who is in top form, but on a line through Senso Unico there is little to choose between that runner and Snaith-trained Triple Time, but it could be the latter who comes away with the lion’s share of the R350,000 purse.
Grant van Niekerk will be aboard, and this improving four-year-old could well be the runner to beat.
