An Aidan O'Brien superstar denied France victory in the Juddmonte International 12 months ago, but Daryz can put the record straight this year on the Knavesmire at York.
It was only City Of Troy that stopped Calandagan triumphing at York and in some ways his stablemate Daryz is on a revenge mission against this year's Ballydoyle big gun, Delacroix.
This race is invariably a must-see and it promises to be so again, and in fairness Delacroix, Ombudsman and Japan's Danon Decile are rivals far in excess of anything Daryz has met so far.
Unraced at two, the Francis-Henri Graffard-trained Sea The Stars colt is four from four so far this year, most recently stepping up to Group Two company to beat Bay City Roller.
The bare form is not near the level required here, of course, but the way he really began to motor when they started sprinting at Saint-Cloud off a steady pace was seriously taking.
He was well on top at the line, despite the narrow margin, and the long Knavesmire straight is only going to play to his strengths. It will be the Arc next, if all goes well.
The O'Brien-trained dual Derby winner Lambourn is unopposable in the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur Stakes. Perhaps more of a grinder than one with the 'X factor', he is nevertheless a very smart colt. Whether he is aimed at the Leger or Arc, or both, after this will be interesting, because Doncaster seems absolutely made for him.
In the Tattersalls-sponsored Acomb Stakes the vote goes to Charlie Appleby's Distant Storm.
As has been the case recently, this 1400m contest looks a top-notch affair and in Distant Storm connections have an exciting one, although a word of caution applies as subsequent 2000 Guineas winner Ruling Court had to settle for third 12 months ago.
The form of his Newmarket maiden win is sizzling hot, with runner-up Constitution River looking smart in coming out to win at Galway, third-placed Catullus winning by a mile at Yarmouth and fifth-placed Oxagon an 8-length scorer at Sandown. Just for good measure the sixth, seventh and ninth have all also won.
Bergerac is a familiar visitor to York and is capable of rewarding each-way backers in the Hong Kong Jockey Club World Pool Handicap, which he won in 2022.
In the Sky Bet Stayers Handicap, the William Haggas-trained Santorini Star could prove suited by a first try at 3200m, and Nad Alshiba Green is worth a look in the Ire Incentive, It Pays To Buy Irish Fillies' Handicap.
Mick Appleby's charge had been progressive prior to being stuck in the mud at Goodwood and the booking of Tom Marquand by the shrewd Rutland yard at a meeting like this is never a bad thing.
Talking of jockey bookings, Richard Hughes has engaged Ryan Moore for Shaman Champion, who will be more streetwise than most in the Sky Bet Nursery Handicap.
He ran really well at Goodwood and the hint should be taken. - Press Association
