Waiting for the return of Tarry-trained filly

October 2022

Jack Milner

Whatyouwaitingfor looked to have loads of potential after her first two runs but has not been seen in action since winning her maiden in her second start.

That run was on 10 May, and it has taken 175 days for the daughter of Canford Cliffs to get back to racing. Now a three-year-old, Whatyouwaitingfor is carded to make her reappearance in Race 7 at the Vaal on Tuesday, a Novice Handicap over 1200m on the straight course.

Trainer Sean Tarry has not found an easy race in which to bring her back, as she will be taking on some useful colts and geldings.

In her first run, Whatyouwaitingfor came up against some very talented two-year-old fillies, finishing a four-length fourth, in a field headed up by Galla Vanting who beat Miss Cool into second.

Galla Vanting went on to win the Grade 3 Pretty Polly Stakes in her next start while Miss Cool took on and beat the colts in the Grade 2 SA Nursery over 1160m at Turffontein. In fact, four fillies went on to win their next starts, and one of them was Whatyouwaitingfor.

She started as the 4-10 favourite and was hardly off the bit to beat Simply Magic by three lengths.

One can obviously expect this filly could be in need of a run, but Tarry is a master at bringing horses back from a layoff and winning with them. Whatyouwaitingfor clearly is above average and could well make a winning comeback.

A very real threat is Roy Magner-trained Thunderstone. This three -year-old was rated highly enough to tackle some of the key juvenile features on the Highveld and send to KwaZulu-Natal to contest the Grade 2 Golden Horseshoe last season.

He ran well enough in those races and has since been gelded. The son of Soft Falling Rain ran in the Bloodstock SA Sales Cup over 1450m on 1 October where he found good betting support to shorten from 33-1 to 13-2 but he finished midfield and was reported not be striding out.

Thunderstone must be showing good work at home and with Gavin Lerena up, must be a lively runner, although he does give Whatyouwaitingfor 4.5kg.

Drop Of Time is another to follow. Trained by Johan Janse van Vuuren, this Pomodoro three-year-old placed in his first two starts after which he was gelded. He came back from the surgery in good nick as he went on to win his first start back, winning a Work Riders’ Maiden Plate over 1000m at Turffontein.

He found stable companion Kalahari Blue too good in his next start, finishing in seventh place, and his last run needs to be ignored as he clearly found 1700m too far at this stage of his career.

He will no doubt enjoy the return to 1200m and with the services of jockey Keagan de Melo, Drop Of Time must be regarded a strong contender.
