Urgent appointment for Kempton punters

October 2025

Urgent Call is bred to be a good bit better than his current rating so could have been let in lightly for the Try Unibet's New Improved Acca Boosts Nursery Handicap at Kempton on Monday.

Trained by Charlie Johnston, Urgent Call has been given a mark of 73 by the handicapper following three promising runs in maiden company. A son of the late Wootton Bassett, his dam Oodnadatta was a decent racemare in her own right for Jessica Harrington, finishing third in the Moyglare at two.

She is closely related to the likes of Pablo Escobarr and Roberto Escobarr, both very useful William Haggas-trained stayers, so next season Urgent Call will no doubt want a trip. On his first run over 1600m last time out he performed a bit better, not surprisingly, and now in handicap company there might be more to come.

Marco Botti's Lizzana was heavily backed on her debut at Wolverhampton but just found one too good. However, the money should only be lent.

She was off the bridle earlier than the eventual winner but was then staying on best of all to be beaten 0.5-lengths by a winner who was having her third run. Lizzana should be a bit more streetwise this time and can put that experience to good use in the Juddmonte/EBF Fillies' Restricted Novice Stakes.

Roger Varian's Welljudged ran a nice race on her debut when second to a much more experienced rival and could go one better in the Unibet 3 Uniboosts A Day Maiden Fillies' Stakes. Her dam is an unraced half-sister to the Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Just The Judge.

At Yarmouth, Pentonville looks a likely type in the British Stallion Studs Future Stayers EBF Novice Stakes.

The race may be aimed at middle-distance horses of the future but there is plenty of speed in his pedigree.

He is by Too Darn Hot out of an Oasis Dream mare, so while there have been some in the family who have stayed much further than this 1400m, it would be no surprise were he to be a speedy type.

Billy Loughnane is on Pentonville and later teams up with Johnston to ride Smiley Face in the British EBF Novice Stakes.

He races in the famous Peter Savill colours and had clearly been showing up well on the gallops in Middleham as he was sent off favourite for his debut at Sandown.

That was over 1000m but this son of Kingman is closely related to Chancellery, who was group placed over 1600m at two for Andre Fabre. Smiley Face is sure to come on for his first run and this extra 200m should suit him down to the ground.

At Musselburgh, Haggas sends Fine Art Dealer on a long trip north from Newmarket for the 100% Racing TV Profits Back To Racing Selling Stakes and it looks a hint worth taking. - Press Association
