UK Racing: Zinc White To Claim Watt Win

July 2023

By Adam Morgan, PA

The stayers are in the spotlight in the 137th Year Of The Watt Memorial Handicap at Beverley and Zinc White could be the answer if bouncing back form his Royal Ascot disappointment.

The five-year-old made a winning start for Ian Williams in the Chester Plate two starts ago, defying an absence of 561 days to win cosily, although that effort possibly took its toll as he was never involved during the Ascot Stakes.

That run tempers enthusiasm slightly but he remains unexposed over marathon trips and if putting his best foot forward, could be the class angle in the race.

Bryan Smart's Lady Nunthorpe took a big step forward from her first run to her second and could have almost won with a clear passage last time out.

Only fourth of five on debut at Carlisle, she showed the Westwood holds no fears recently when never far away in a race won by Rocket Money.

Should she improve again for that outing, her track experience and the in-form Paul Mulrennan should ensure that she is right on the premises.

Tim Easterby's Wade's Magic showed a bit more dropped to five furlongs 10 days ago and back over the minimum trip in the first division of the Malcolm Greenslade Doncaster LVA Stalwart Memorial Handicap, he might be the one to concentrate on.

Band Of Joy has looked a useful operator in her two outings so far and George Boughey's youngster rates as the one to beat in the Legends & EBF Fillies' Restricted Novice Stakes at Lingfield.

The daughter of Land Force was a silver medallist at Windsor on debut, but returned to the same venue to go one better earlier this month.

She looked to have plenty left in the tank during that triumph and could have more to give now as she moves up to six furlongs.

Clive Cox's Ice Cool Harry has the chance to build on his Lingfield course-and-distance success in novice company as he enters the handicap ranks off a mark of 79 in the At The Races App Expert Tips Handicap.

Tom Marquand is an interesting jockey booking for Adrian Keatley's Sparkling Spirit in the At The Races App Form Study Handicap.

Third on her second run for Andrew Balding, she changed hands and found herself with Keatley.

On her first outing for new connections, she was third at Wolverhampton and she has been allotted a mark of 65 which looks fair enough.

Hughie Morrison's Tuki Tuki could break her duck at the third attempt in the British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes at Nottingham.

Third on debut at Newbury to Henry Candy's smart filly Araminta, she filled the same spot most recently behind Ice Cool Harry.

Her first run was over seven furlongs, then she dropped to six and is now over five but given it seemed she did not quite get home last time, that looks a sensible move.

Over the obstacles at Southwell, the in-form Wick Green can complete a hat-trick in the Connie White Memorial Handicap Chase.

Ben Pauling's veteran was a 10-length winner at Worcester in May and then defied an 8lb rise to follow up over course and distance earlier this month.

He was a commanding four lengths ahead of the field then and can prove he has even more in the locker despite a further 5lb rise.

Young Merlin made a successful switch from the Flat to strike readily over track and trip last month and is tough to oppose for Amy Murphy in the At The Races App Form Study Novices' Hurdle.
