Two things not seen very often in South African racing, is a six-year-old maiden still plying her trade, and a six-year-old making its racecourse debut.
Well, on Wednesday at Hollywoodbets Greyville, racegoers will witness both these extraordinary events in the first race of the day.
Trainer Paul Gadsby will be saddling two runners in this Maiden Plate for fillies and mares over 1000 – six-year-old Roy’s Daisie, who will be having her third career run, and six-year-old Roy’s Lizzie, who will be making her debut.
“These horses have been with Roy Moodley (breeder and owner) for a long time,” said Gadsby on Wednesday morning.
“There was a whole bunch of them and we took them in. They are finally just starting to race now and we will see how they are.
“They’re not showing much at this stage.”
According to Gadbsy he has had a couple of six-year-olds making a belated debut. “But it is unusual. Normally when they haven’t raced by the age of four or five, it doesn’t happen.”
