There looks to be two possible exotic bankers for bettors at the Vaal on Tuesday which is good news, especially for the Pick 6, because some of the other legs are real stinkers.
The runners that stand out are Bjorn Ironside in Race 4 and Mamlambo in Race 7.
Johan Janse van Vuuren-trained Bjorn Ironside contests a Graduation Plate over 1000m and comes into the race as the best handicapped runner.
The son of Gimmethegreenlight was considered good enough to make the trip to the Western Cape where he took on the likes of One Strip in the Grade 1 Cape Guineas. Unfortunately, nothing went right, from a slow start to pulling up short, but it also indicated that 1600m was probably too far and a return to sprints has brought up some good results.
Bjorn Ironside was off from February to August and returned in a Graduation Plate and ran well enough to finish a 1.80-length second behind Rodeo Drive and followed that up in another Graduation Plate with a 0.50-length victory over Pennsylvania. Both those races were over 1200m on the Turffontein Inside track.
Pennsylvania franked the form with a victory at Turffontein on Saturday.
The drop to 1000m should not be an issue and with Muzi Yeni, who comes off a treble at Turffontein on Saturday, in such good form, Bjorn Ironside should notch up a double in his peak run.
Trainer Heather Adamson has done well with her small string of runners but she finally appears to have landed a promising youngster with Mamlambo. This three-year-old daughter of Canford Cliffs has hardly put a foot wrong in her three starts to date, finishing a 0.30-length second behind Fair Proposal over 1160m and has gone on to notch up two facile victories, both over 1400m.
She tries a touch further at the Vaal in this MR 82 Handicap over 1500m this time, but she could still be better than her rating.
Marco van Rensburg has ridden her in both of her wins and he will be back in the irons for this race.
