Jack Milner: Usually at the start of a new season, the best horses are put away in order to give them a break ahead of the Highveld Summer Season.
However, courtesy of Bloodstock South Africa, there are two R400,000 races for three-year-olds over 1400m at Turffontein on Saturday.
In fact, a number of runners who competed in last weekend’s Grade 1 Thekwini Stakes for fillies and Premiers Champion Stakes over 1600m at Greyville, are back in action.
The two Non-Black Type events, to be run on the Standside track, are Race 6, the Bloodstock SA Sales Cup (Fillies), and Race 7 the Bloodstock SA Sales Cup (Colts and Geldings).
Supreme Quest dominates the fillies’ race. This daughter of Querari looks really decent and was strongly fancied to win the Thekwini Stakes.
A lot of things went wrong in a rough race. She was not only bumped, but jockey Richard Fourie lost his rein and the filly shifted around. But in spite of all that, she still managed to run third, beaten just a neck by Rain In Holland.
These races are run at level weights and she comes into this race with at least a 7kg advantage based on merit ratings. So, from No 1 draw, and Lyle Hewitson in the irons, this Corne Spies runner has it all in her favour.
The race for colts and geldings looks far more competitive and it interesting this race has even attracted Justin Snaith to bring up a runner for this event. Gaudis Masterpiece contested the Premiers Champion Stakes but disappointed and finished ninth, 4.30 lengths behind Good Traveller.
He is better than that run and he most come into the reckoning. He is nicely drawn at No 2 and Craig Zackey has the ride.
Spies also has a strong hand in this race as he saddles William Robertson, who finished a 1.30-length third in the Grade 1 feature at Greyville. Hewitson takes this ride as well and the Rafeef colt should go close.
But the runner who could top them all is Bard Of Avon from the Ashley Fortune stable. He won the Bloodstock SA Sales Cup over 1300m at Greyville on Durban July day, so he has had time to rest after his travels.
The Var gelding has raced three times for two wins and a second, that coming in the Grade 1 Gold Medallion over 1200m at Scottsville.
He is narrowly handicapped to get the better of William Robertson in what should be an interesting race.
Aldo Domeyer is carded to ride Bard Of Avon.
