Thunder to strike at Yarmouth

September 2024

Midnight Thunder can stamp his class on the British Stallion Studs EBF Novice Stakes at Yarmouth on Tuesday.

A Godolphin-owned and bred son of Kodiac, the bay is out of a Dubawi mare and trained by Saeed bin Suroor.

He made his debut at Pontefract in August, being sent off the 15-8 favourite, and while his supporters did not collect on the day he did catch the eye in finishing a 1.5-length second after losing plenty of ground with a slow start.

Those losses were only lent, as again strong in the market next time out at Windsor the penny looked to have dropped, cruising to a 4.75-length victory over 1200m, eased up crossing the line to confirm the promise of that first run.

That was at the latter end of August and returning to action under Oisin Murphy, the two-year-old can shine again over the same trip.

On the same card, Green Storm can take the Get Raceday Ready Restricted Maiden Stakes for Charlie Johnston and Billy Loughnane.

The Circus Maximus colt was third on debut behind two subsequent winners, one of whom he crossed paths with again next time out when tackling the same Haydock 1400m in early June.

That horse, Hugo Palmer's Seagulls Eleven, got the better of him by 2.25-lengths, but there was plenty of credit in Green Storm's improved performance against a horse who was second to Ancient Truth in the Superlative Stakes at Newmarket next time out.

Johnston's youngster then stepped up to 1600m on the all-weather at Kempton to finish the runner up again to Ralph Beckett's unbeaten Amiloc, and now tackles another 200m more with seemingly more to offer yet.

Saint Riquier is difficult to oppose as he bids to complete his hat-trick in the Thank You Racing Foundation Handicap at Brighton.

The six-year-old has returned from a near two-year lay-off in excellent form, with a comeback third at Sandown in early August followed by wins at Lingfield and Leicester.

He was absolutely dominant on the latter occasion, romping home by 9.5-lengths, and yet because that was an apprentice race he is able to turn out just a week later off the same mark.

Assuming his recent exertions have not caught up with him, another win looks in the offing.

American Bay is rated the best bet at Redcar in the Watch Racing TV Free For 31 Days Novice Stakes.

Harry Charlton's New Bay gelding fared well last term as a two-year-old without winning and while he has still to get a win under his belt, he has been running creditably in competitive handicaps at a higher level than this.

Last seen finishing fourth of 16 in a 1400m Newbury contest, he now eases down a little in grade and should be able to claim his first victory against less-experienced rivals.

The Johnston-trained Bamburgh can make it third time lucky in the Download The Racecourse App Raceday Ready Maiden Stakes at Newcastle.

The Zoffany colt has been placed in both of his two runs to date, both times coming home behind well-bred types on the turf.

Bamburgh's own pedigree is hardly shabby, with Classic winner Mother Earth his full-sister. - Press Association
