This girl’s off to fly at Kyalami

January 2024

Candice Bass-Robinson could be the stable to follow at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday and although it is a testing 10-race card, it would be a surprise if the stable failed to come away without a winner or two.

It is 11 months since Kyalami Girl last ran but she should make a winning reappearance in Race 4, a Maiden Plate for fillies and mares over 1200m.

The Querari filly has only raced twice, both times as a juvenile over 1200m at this course and finished second on both occasions. Kyalami Girl went off at 33-1 on debut but went down a short head to Siddeley.

As a result she was sent off an 18-10 favourite for the Non-Black Type Bloodstock SA Sales Cup (Fillies) where she was beaten 1.50 lengths by stable companion The Charleston.

However, behind her that day were some decent fillies, including Golden Sickle who finished third. We haven’t seen her in action since then but Bass-Robinson’s comment on her is non-committal as she wrote “Nice filly, having her first run after a long break” in the Computaform. But what is missing is “might need the run” and if close to her best Kyalami Girl will take some beating.

Aldo Domeyer takes the ride.

Stable companion Lunch Money finished second in his only start over 1000m and, having recaptured his form reverting to sprints recently, dropping back to 1000m in Race 8 could also bring about a return to winning ways for this Rafeef gelding who will be ridden for the first time by visiting Durban-based jockey Sean Veale.

Similarly, Gimmethewaltz got her career back on track reverting to a sprint distance last time with a fast-finishing second over 1100m so the extra 100m on offer in Race 9 will suit this Gimmethegreenlight filly down to the ground.

Domeyer, who has ridden this filly twice for a win and a third, is back aboard the promising three-year-old who ought to bounce back to winning ways over a more suitable distance.
