After the excitement of last week’s racing at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth it’s a bit of a comedown on Saturday at the venue where the Listed Jamaica Handicap for fillies and mares over 2000m is the lone feature race on the card.
However, while it does not contain the level of runners who contested the Grade 1 Cartier Paddock Stakes there are some progressive runners in the line-up.
It is not an easy race to decipher but based on the recent performances of Make It Snappy, who won the Paddock Stakes and the Grade 1 Cape Fillies Guineas prior to that, it could be worth going with Do Angels Cry, trained by Candice Bass-Robinson.
Hopefully she and jockey Aldo Domeyer will have got over the disappointment of last week’s defeat of Charles Dickens in the L’Ormarins King’s Plate as they will team up again with this five-year-old mare.
The daughter of Captain Al returned from a four-month break in November when she contested the Non-Black Type Summer Bowl over 1600m which was won by Make It Snappy who beat home Marina and Chansonette with Do Angels Cry fourth. Behind her was Grade 1 Woolavington 2000 winner Silver Darling.
One month later Do Angels Cry contested the Grade 3 Victress Stakes over 1800m in which she finished a 1.25-length second behind Marina with Silver Darling once again just behind her.
While Marina was disappointing in the Paddock Stakes, Silver Darling finished third, beaten 1.55 lengths by Make It Snappy with Captain’s Ransom splitting them.
That does a lot for the form of Do Angels Cry, and despite having to carry top weight of 60kg, she has the form to win a race of this nature. She has won over 2000m so the distance is not a concern, is drawn No 1 and she will also be having her peak run following the four-month rest.
She does have a group of decent younger horses taking her on, including Time Flies who is trained by Brett Crawford.
Time Flies has taken her game and form to another level since racing beyond 1400m. In those two starts, both over 1800m, the lightly raced four-year-old Dynasty filly has been impressive. She overcame a six-point penalty after a two-month break to beat a useful field by 1.25 lengths with a smart turn of foot and, on the evidence of that display, should have even more to offer going 2000m for the first time.
But based on that last run she will have quite a bit of work to do to hold off Black Silver from the Justin Snaith yard. This five-year-old daughter of Silvano finished third in that 1800m race, beaten 1.75 lengths, and will now meet Time Flies on 4kg better terms.
Interestingly, Black Silver will now be ridden by Louie Mxothwa who has ridden Time Flies on three previous occasions. However, he cannot make the weight and Kabelo Matsunyane takes the ride.
That won’t be a problem as Matsunyane rode her to victory last time.
Others to consider are Bye Bye Bombshell from the Snaith yard with Richard Fourie up as well as Gold Poker Game from the Bass-Robinson yard, an improving three-year-old with Gareth Wright aboard.
