The Best for Last

March 2025

Henk Steenkamp

They are saving the best for last at the Fairview Turf Track meeting on Friday.

The eighth and last race on the card is a Pinnacle Stakes over 2700m and it should be the highlight of the day.

Bournemouth (Alan Greeff), Zatara Magic (Gavin Smith) and Firealley (Jacques Strydom) resume rivalry after they were the first three past the post in January.

They clashed in the Non-Black Type Lakeside Handicap over 2400m on that day.

This time the consistent Firealley is much better weighted after he finished 2.5 lengths behind Bournemouth.

Fireally is 7.5kgs better off at the weights now but tries the distance for the first time.

If there is a good pace in the race the distance should not be a problem and Fireally should fight out the finish. Chase Maujean is in the saddle.

Bournemouth won very well last time out and is clearly in a good space. Jockey Richard Fourie has the benefit of pole position to help him dictate matters.

Zatara Magic finished 2.25 lengths behind Bournemouth last time but is 5.5kgs better off at the weights now.

Craig Zackey will likely encourage him to race on the speed and another gutsy effort is expected from Zatara Magic.

It will be a surprise if the winner doesn’t come out of these three runners. Ten runners will face the starter at 16:35 to close the day.

The first race gets the Bipot underway at 12:30. The Place Accumulator starts with the second race at 13:05.

Pick Six players can go light in the first leg, race three, which jumps at 13:40.

This should be a boat race between Lovegrass (Greeff) and Bomber Girl (Zietsman Oosthuizen).

Original Copy (Greeff) must be included in the first leg of Jackpot One, race four at 14:15.

After just missing out on victory last month, Asinantanga (Gavin Smith), is a possible banker in the sixth race.
