Talk Of New York can boost classic credentials

April 2026

Talk Of New York could become the chatter of Newmarket on Tuesday as the Flat turf season begins to step up a notch this week.

Classic aspirations are set to be put to the test across the country and Charlie Appleby's son of Wootton Bassett gets the first chance to lay down a marker in the Federation Of Bloodstock Agents EBF Conditions Stakes.

Already as short as 6-1 second-favourite behind Bow Echo for the 2000 Guineas, things will have to go right to maintain his lofty reputation on the Rowley Mile in a race featuring stiff opposition and also won by just one favourite in the last 10 years.

But he sets a clear standard judged on the potential of his impressive Kempton debut then close-up third in the Jumeirah 2000 Guineas, where only a lack of big-match practice stopped him following in the footsteps of the stable's Classic winner from last year, Ruling Court.

He is the least experienced of five, but brings plenty of excitement and untapped potential to the table.

The Moulton Paddocks team also unleash another son of Wootton Bassett, Cerro Blanco, in the opening Alex Scott Maiden Stakes they won 12 months ago with Indian Springs.

There is nothing to go on in terms of form in a race which is often used as a port of call for above average operators, but it is of note a top operation is prepared to send one straight into battle against some useful looking opposition.

Market vibes could prove telling, but we could be looking at one to keep on side over the coming months.

Oisin Murphy catches the eye aboard Regal Envoy in the Racing TV Handicap after the champion jockey steered William Knight's seven-year-old to victory 12 months ago.

There is little in his recent form to inspire real encouragement but he is just 2lb higher than when successful last year and could be worth a swing having shown up well fresh previously.

In the Never Ordinary At bet365 Handicap it could pay to forgive George Scott's Major Neigh Sayer his disappointing run in Listed company at Saint-Cloud in November now entering the handicap ranks off a mark of 85.

It was deep ground that day in France and with the benefit of hindsight may have been one run too many at the end of his two-year-old season.

Prior to that he was an impressive winner over 1400m on this track and granted a sounder surface this time could rekindle his progress to make a winning return.

Over the obstacles at Market Rasen, Jasmine Bliss could come out on top in an intriguing Book Summer Plate Ladies Day Today Mares' Novices' Handicap Chase.

Although burdened with top-weight in a race where Emma Lavelle's Listed runner-up Blue is rated just 1lb inferior, the scene appears perfect for Harry Derham's seven-year-old to show she has not yet reached her ceiling.

She has taken well to the switch to fences this term, finishing a close-up third at Kempton on Boxing Day before getting off the mark in just her second chasing appearance in the Listed Lady Protectress Mares' Chase at Huntingdon.

She backed that up with a respectable second in the Pendil Novices' Chase at Kempton and sets a good standard back against her own sex. - Press Association
