Take your best shot at Fairview

August 2024
Jack Milner
Horses improve at different rates and one tends to see this trend in particular at the start of their three-year-old careers.

One of those is My Best Shot who was getting better with every run as his two-year-old career came to a close. He demonstrated that in particular when a good third behind some decent runners last time at Fairview over 1400m at the end of last month.

The Fire Away colt found betting support and made good late progress when third and only 0.35 lengths behind Makazole.

Tomorrow, he lines up in Race 8, a MR 80 Handicap over 1400m and he should notch up a victory in his first run as a three-year-old. My Best Shot has won two of his last four starts and was impressive in those wins.

Both were over this distance on the turf and My Best Shot was only third when trying the Polytrack in April.

Jockey Sean Veale replaces regular pilot Richard Fourie again for this race and his style of giving patient rides could work again on this colt.

Alan Greeff’s charge looks a runner to follow and an impressive victory in this event could set the tone for some of the feature races for three-year-olds that lie ahead of him.

The rest of the card is very tricky and bettors need to load the other legs of the exotic bets.

Trainer Tara Laing has her runners in fine form and Kilmonivaig looks ready to pick up another win when she lines up in Race 4, a MR 70 Handicap for fillies and mares over 1400m.

The five-year-old daughter of William Longsword has raced four times over this course and distance for three places. She has won over this trip and is currently in good form.

Although carrying top weight of 62kg, she should be able to upend this weak field, especially from No 3 draw, and give Chase Maujean the victory.
