November 2025

TOP-TIER RACING AT HOME AND ABROAD THIS WEEKEND

Good racing locally is backed up by solid international fare this weekend. An unbeaten filly takes on a tough rival in a Grade 2 race at Kenilworth on Saturday, and on Sunday the Betway Victory Moon Stakes gives a Betway Summer Cup hopeful a good chance of securing a spot in the final field. The global highlight comes on Saturday morning, when Australian Horse of the Year bids for back-to-back wins in the Group 1 Champion Stakes on the final day of the 2025 Melbourne Racing Carnival. The World Pool will be in operation at this meeting.

FRIDAY HIGHLIGHTS

FAIRVIEW: GREEFF’S PAIR CAN DOMINATE IN TOPLINER

Last season’s champion older filly Splicethemainbrace returns to the track in the topliner, Race 2 over 1400m. Trainer Alan Greeff has booked 2.5kg-claiming apprentice Girish Dookhit to ride her, while stable jockey Richard Fourie has opted for older mare Enchanting Choice, herself no slouch with a hat-trick of recent wins. Splicethemainbrace should win at the weights, but take cover in a boxed Exacta with Fourie’s mount and Dean Smith’s entry Enchanting Choice.

HOLLYWOODBETS GREYVILLE: 1200M SPOT ON FOR CATS PAJAMAS

Top runners Dave The King and Gladatorian resume racing after a three-month break in Race 8 over 1200m. Both are now considered better over further, but Dave The King is unbeaten in three starts over 1200m and Gladatorian has two wins over the course and distance. Cats Pajamas, another class act, is probably best suited to 1200m at this stage of his career. He ran a promising race after a rest recently and could win with a talented 4kg claimer aboard.

MEYDAN: SEEMAR TO STRIKE IN FIRST JUVENILE RACE OF SEASON

Former champion trainer Bhupat Seemar introduces US-bred Six Speed in Race 3 over 1200m, the first juvenile race of the season with a field of 10 unraced two-year-olds. Six Speed was sourced at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Sale in April. He is by top US dirt sire Not This Time and caught the eye when winning a recent barrier trial at Meydan. Always handy, he drew clear of eight rivals in the closing stages to score in comfortable fashion in the fastest time of the day. His wide draw is not a concern and he will be hard to beat.

SATURDAY HIGHLIGHTS

FLEMINGTON: VIA SISTINA AIMS FOR TAB CHAMPION STAKES DOUBLE

Fresh from her second Cox Plate win, Australian Horse Of The Year Via Sistina is at short odds to win Race 8, the Group 1 TAB Champion Stakes run at weight for age over 2000m. She won this $AUD3-million race last year, her form since is almost flawless and this looks the easiest Group 1 event she has contested for a while. Race 1 is at 03:40.

SELANGOR: LEGEND SIXTY-THREE COULD GO ONE BETTER

Legend Sixty-Three was beaten into second when a short-priced favourite a fortnight ago, but looks set to make amends in Race 6 over 1500m at Kuala Lumpur. He has been a model of consistency with five runner-up finishes at this level. He looks well treated at the weights and is the one to beat. The meeting starts at 06:30.

HOLLYWOODBETS KENILWORTH: TOP FILLIES IN GRADE 2 SHOWDOWN

There are four stakes races on a quality card including Race 7, the Grade 2 Western Cape Fillies Championship over 1400m. Greeff’s unbeaten star Anotherdanceforme renews rivalry with Tienie Prinsloo’s Quickstepgal, who finished 1.40 lengths behind her in the Grade 2 Golden Slipper on HWB July Day. Prinsloo objected against the winner on the grounds of interference that day. He has now booked champion jockey Gavin Lerena for Quickstepgal and believes she can turn the tables. Whatever the outcome It should be a thriller.

DONCASTER: IN-FORM HAGGAS CAN STRIKE WITH MONTASSIB

William Haggas, who has a 25% winning strike rate in the last 14 days, saddles well-performed Montassib in Race 4 over 1200m. This gelding by Exceed and Excel is a strong contender and likely to start favourite. The race is a significant drop in class for him after a recent Group 1 outing in the Qipco British Champions Sprint Stakes at Ascot.

SUNDAY HIGHLIGHTS

SHA TIN: CAP FERRAT COULD DETHRONE ENSUED IN TOPLINER

Ensued will defend his title in Race 7, the SA Ladies’ Purse Handicap over 1800m. Back to a preferred distance and with conditions to suit, he’ll be a major player if he can travel handier. He faces a big danger in Cap Ferrat, who ran better than an eighth placing suggests last time out after being blocked in the final 300m. The meeting starts at 07:00.

PERAK: ARIGATO DROPS IN CLASS AND LOOKS SET TO GO CLOSE

New Zealand-bred seven-year-old Arigato returns to familiar territory in Race 5 over 1300m, the course and distance of his two victories earlier this year. Both wins were achieved with bold front-running displays. He was outclassed last time out in a Listed race but has a much weaker assignment here. The meeting starts at 07:15.

TURFFONTEIN: THE ULTIMATE KING CAN BOOK HIS CUP BERTH

It’s make or break for Tony Peter’s gelding The Ultimate King, who has a chance to stake a decisive claim for a Betway Summer Cup berth in Race 7, the Grade 3 Betway Victory Moon Stakes over 1800m. While his current rating might leave him on the edge of Cup qualification, the four-year-old has shown he’s more than capable of rising to the occasion. Last time out he impressed with a gutsy finish, fighting off a determined young challenger on the inside track. His trainer reckons he’s better on the Standside track, plus he has a handy weight from a favourable draw, His turn of foot could prove key again, even in this stronger class. Peter’s cracking sprinter Buffalo Storm Cody should get Pick 6 punters off to a flying start in Race 4 over 1160m, in which he could be too quick for older star William Robertson.

SUGGESTED R200 (25%) PICK 6 PERM (Leg 1 Race 4 @ 13:45):

Leg 1: 1

Leg 2: 1, 5, 7, 9

Leg 3: 1, 6, 7, 8, 11

Leg 4: 3, 4, 6, 9, 11

Leg 5: 3, 5

Leg 6: 2, 3, 8, 10
