Sword Maker looks sharp for Salisbury

October 2025

Sword Maker looked a horse to follow when winning at the St Leger meeting and he can take the next step up the ladder in the British EBF Joan Snow Memorial Conditions Stakes at Salisbury on Thursday.

Saeed bin Suroor's colt made his debut in what is now a famous maiden at Newmarket on the July course which was won by Distant Storm from Constitution River, with the likes of Oxagon and Venetian Prince in behind.

Sent to Redcar a fortnight later he had little trouble justifying favouritism but then, like so many can, he seemed ill at ease at Ripon next time out.

Back to a more conventional track at Doncaster and in a nursery, he looked much better than his opening mark of 80 and the handicapper thought so too as he hit him with a 10lb hike for a three-length win.

This looks a logical next step before a possible tilt at a black-type race before the end of the season, when no doubt a trip to Dubai will be on the horizon.

Ralph Beckett makes a habit of mopping up the maiden and novice races at Salisbury at this stage of the season and his Music Academy looks a likely type.

Doreen Tabor paid 600,000 guineas for the daughter of Kingman out of the Listed winner Pure Excellence.

She has already produced a Listed winner herself in Archie Watson's Parent's Prayer and the Charlie Appleby-trained Treasure Fleet took his record to three from three back in April but has not been seen since.

After his annus mirabilis last year, Beckett has not quite hit the same heights this season but he is currently operating at a near 35 per-cent strike rate which is far from shabby and his juveniles are winning their fair share.

The William Haggas-trained Poetry Of Time got going a few strides too late on his debut at Thirsk but with that experience in the memory bank he can go one better in the Pyledriver British EBF Novice Stakes.

David O'Meara's The Crafty Mole has suddenly found some improvement and looked value for a good bit more than the official margin when winning at Ripon on Saturday.

That is clearly what his handler thinks as he is running him under a 5lb penalty in the PricedUp The Flat Grassroots Series Stayers' Final Handicap at Nottingham, where there is £30,000 up for grabs.

He travelled through the race with a fair degree of authority before going to put it to bed, which he did, just about, because he idled markedly in the closing stages and held on by a short head.

That was his first win over 3200m but coming back 400m should be more in his favour.

Simon and Ed Crisford's Harriet Quimby certainly catches the eye in the pricedup.bet EBF Oh So Sharp Maiden Fillies' Stakes.

She is by Pinatubo and out of the Oaks winner Qualify which makes her a half-sister to Andre Fabre's Cualificar, who is well fancied for the Arc on Sunday. Any market confidence should be noted.

At Southwell, J J Slevin is over to ride the Nigel and Willy-Twiston-Davies-trained Masked Man in the Jodie Standing's Point-To-Point Recruits Novices' Hurdle for his bosses Simon Munir and Isaac Souede and that looks noteworthy. - Press Association
