Starzand to take leading Ffos Las role

October 2025

With the jumps season swinging into gear, Starzand could lay down an early marker for the months ahead when he returns to Ffos Las for the second division of the DragonBet Supporting British Racing Maiden Hurdle.

A son of Derby hero Harzand, the four-year-old set his owners back £230,000 at the sales on the back of a bloodless 25-length romp in a Dromahane point-to-point last December.

Trained by Philip Hobbs and Johnson White, he made an impressive start to life under rules when bolting up in a bumper at the west Wales venue in the spring and it is interesting connections head to familiar territory to begin his hurdling career, but he should take plenty of beating.

Another taking their next step at Ffos Las after a promising introduction is A King Of Magic, who was not far behind well-regarded winner Our Boy Stan and subsequent Persian War third Moneygarrow when third for Tom Weston on debut in a Kempton bumper in February.

He has since been snapped up by Paddy Brennan to run in the colours of his racing syndicates and has also been switched to Paul Nicholls and holds leading claims as he begins life for the Ditcheat handler in the DragonBet BOG And Extra Places National Hunt Flat Race.

At Leicester, William Stone's Big Harry could be one to watch out for after finishing an eyecatching third to subsequent Fillies' Mile runner-up Venetian Lace at Chelmsford on debut in June.

His inexperience was evident throughout, but the way he knuckled down towards the conclusion of that 1200m event presents the possibility of a strong showing in the Happy Birthday Richard Clowes EBF Maiden Stakes.

Elsewhere on the card, it would be no surprise to see Jennie Candlish's Good Banter delight punters if slightly improving on his recent course outing in the Happy Birthday Hamish Claiming Stakes.

The best bet at Catterick could be the hat-trick seeking Bollin Neil in the following racingtv.com Handicap.

Tim Easterby's track regular has been in rude health this season and having also won here over hurdles in February, he has gone on to strike a further three times at staying trips on the level.

Sticking with the Flat action, there is an all-weather feast at Wolverhampton where it would be no surprise to see Peregrine Falcon swoop to victory in the Create Your Bet Builders At Midnite Maiden Stakes having shown some smart form over the track and trip this term.

It could kick-off a fine evening for Billy Loughnane as he hunts down 200 winners for the year, as he also has leading claims for boss George Boughey aboard both the in-form After Love in the Always Gamble Responsibly At BetMGM Fillies' Handicap and Green Dame in the Win £250,000 With BetMGM's Golden Goals Nursery Handicap.

Loughnane and Boughey also link up with Highclere's Tryst, who was much improved on a sounder surface on her second start at Newmarket when bumping into a well-backed favourite of Charlie Appleby, ironically ridden that day by the young weighing room star.

That winner is slated for better things, so it is easy to envisage Tryst taking of plenty of beating in the Read Meg Nicholls' Blog At betmgm.co.uk Fillies' Novice Stakes. - Press Association
