Son And Sannie set for more success

May 2022

Son And Sannie can make it two wins in eight days in the Annie Oxtoby Memorial Handicap on Tuesday at Beverley.

Rated as high as 82 last spring, the six-year-old was initially a little disappointing after leaving Paul Midgley's yard to join Archie Watson.

But that loss of form did at least lead to a drop in the weights and he made the most of what looked a gilt-edged opportunity at Windsor.

Switching back to turf following a spell on the all-weather, the son of Es Que Love was good value for the winning margin of a length and as that was an apprentice race, he is able to compete from the same mark on the Westwood.

With the excellent Benoit De La Sayette's claim taking a further 7lb off his back, Son And Sannie will be extremely hard to beat if in the same form.

Richard Fahey's Ramazan gets the nod in the opening Racing TV Novice Stakes.

The well-related Kodiac colt finished last of four on his racecourse introduction at Pontefract a couple of weeks ago, but nevertheless shaped with distinct promise.

Despite a tardy start and looking a little clueless during the early stages, Ramazan was far from disgraced in being beaten only 6.5-lengths by an odds-on favourite who had already finished second at Newmarket.

He should be a little wiser at the second time of asking and ought to make his presence felt.

Pavlodar will not be winning out of turn if he can claim top honours in the Westwood Handicap.

Clive Cox's charge was placed in three of his four starts as a juvenile last term, but it was not enough to prevent him from being gelded during the off-season.

He made his first appearance since at Windsor last month and was only beaten half a length into third.

Pavlodar will surely be a littler sharper for the outing and will take some stopping.

Sir Michael Stoute has his string in rude health and can add to his tally with the Queen's Kiteflyer in the Cazoo Restricted Novice Stakes at Chepstow.

The son of Iffraaj is actually one of two runners in a five-strong field for the master of Freemason Lodge along with Lebsayer, who should progress from his debut fourth at Yarmouth.

But Kiteflyer certainly brings the stronger form to the table, having placed third on his introduction in the Wood Ditton at Newmarket's Craven meeting.

The recent success of the runner-up Secret State at Chester gives that form a very solid look and normal improvement will make him a tough nut to crack in Monmouthshire.

Knebworth can double up at Lingfield in the At The Races App Form Study Novice Stakes.

Trained by Richard Hughes, the son of Awtaad looked an exciting prospect when rocketing clear inside the last of five furlongs on his competitive bow here three and a half weeks ago.

It is hard to know what to make of the form, but he could do no more than win impressively and he is expected to be capable of defying a penalty before dipping his toe in deeper waters down the line.

All-weather fare also comes from Newcastle, where the James Fanshawe-trained Murau can make it back-to-back course and distance wins in the opening Impeccable Pig Inn, Sedgefield Handicap.

The four-year-old bolted up at Gosforth Park in early March and an opening mark of 75 for his handicap debut looks on the generous side.

Brian Hughes unsurprisingly has a strong book of rides at Sedgefield, with Cilluirid perhaps the pick of them in the Paxtons Wouldn't Be Without Romero Insurance Handicap Chase.

Tim Easterby's eight-year-old was last seen notching his fourth success from seven visits to the County Durham circuit three weeks ago, when he put another course favourite in Road Warrior in his place.

A 4lb rise does not look insurmountable by any stretch of the imagination. - Press Association
