Snaith could steal the thunder at Fairview

July 2023

Jack Milner

There are many factors to be resolved in Port Elizabeth on Friday but the questions will all be answered by the end of the meeting at Fairview.

The first was sorted out on Thursday with the announcement that the meeting, which includes two Listed races, will be run on the turf although the going will be heavy.

Will Richard Fourie claim two more winners on the card to make him only the second jockey to ride 100 winners in a season in the Eastern Cape?

Can Gavin Smith hold on to his two-win lead over Alan Greeff and claim the Champion Trainer title?

Then there is decision about which runners to honour at the East Cape awards ceremony.

Justin Snaith could have an impact on the Champion Trainer outcome as he has eight decent runners carded and that would assist Smith to cling on to his lead.

In fact, Snaith could come away with the trophies for both feature races.

The first is Race 6, the Listed Port Elizabeth Gold Cup over 3200m, where Snaith holds a very strong hand with his carded runners Silver Host and Top Quality.

Both are proven stayers, and in the case of Silver Host, he could well have competed on Sunday at Hollywoodbets Greyville in the Grade 3 Gold Cup instead of Fairview.

Silver Host has to carry 62kg and in heavy going over 3200m it could prove too tough a task.

Top Quality, however, has decent form in the wet and should relish this race. Grant van Niekerk takes the ride on what looks a worthy favourite.

Greeff has improving three-year-old Heathcliff (ironically a former Snaith inmate) and the further he has gone the better he has looked, so he has to be a threat. Fourie takes this ride.

Snaith has Underworld in the Champion Juvenile Cup (Listed) over 1400m, Race 7, and he looks tough to oppose. The Querari colt has won two of his three races but what is relevant that his last win was in heavy going at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth.

This juvenile has got better with each run and is hat-trick seeking after some good wins.

He steps up in distance and Van Niekerk will have to overcome a wide draw but he does look hard to beat.
