Smith to get into Cruise Control

September 2022

Jack Milner

Punters will be treated to a clash between trainers Alan Greeff and Gavin Smith with their charges set to fight out the finish of Race 7, the Speedsters Stakes over 1000m at Fairview on Friday.

Greeff has the two likely favourites in Inherit The Rain and Whatever Next but they can expect a decent challenge from Stranger Danger and Cruise Control from Smith.

Inherit The Rain is coming off a disappointing performance a couple of weeks ago when unplaced on his favourite surface.

It could be noteworthy that Inherit The Rain did not come with his usual strong finish on the outside of the course and instead was taken to the inside of the Polytrack to finish unplaced.

Inherit The Rain has won on the turf but is clearly better on the Polytrack.

Whatever Next was a top juvenile who did not produce his best when three but the addition of blinkers a couple of runs back sparked him back to his best and he will be doing his best work at the finish.

Stranger Danger is very speedy and has been lethal over this course and distance but is returning from a break so will not be at his sharpest.

Stablemate Cruise Control can be anything.

This three-time winner from just five starts has shown him to be decent on his day and he was full of running when returning after gelding.

He has mixed his three wins with two shocking efforts so one is never certain what Cruise Control will turn up on the day. It is possible that gelding has settled him down.

There are a couple more runners who could pop up into the places.

What A Winner and Evies First represent a trainer, Juan Nel who had his best yet season last season and these two have done well for him and are both course and distance suited. What A Winner would want a soft track to be seen at his very best.

Trainer Cliffie Miller has his runners in form and Light That Loose has ability on his day. He is returning from a lengthy suspension, having bled in his latest start.

Sometimes a break and a restriction to sprinting races does help these bleeders.

It is a difficult card that has been set for punters, but we should get a decent run out of Bold Strike in Race 6.

The gelding has been consistent of late and from pole position should get the run of the race and could perhaps score another deserved win.
