With just four Fairview meetings left this season the battle for Eastern Cape Champion trainer is one of the talking points of the South African racing scene.
With Alan Greeff and Gavin Smith all square on 113 going into last Monday’s meeting, it was Smith who managed to come way with three winners while Greeff had a rare blank day.
Every winner counts at this this stage and Greeff would surely want to make some significant inroads on that lead at Fairview on Friday where they race on the Polytrack.
Both trainers have winning opportunities and perusing the early betting sees runners from the two stables topping the boards split at three apiece.
Not that it means that much as both have opened the floodgates of their stables for the meeting – Smith with 22 runners carded and Greeff with 20.
They have so many runners with winning chances it is almost impossible to see which way this will go but Smith looks likely to get off to a winning start in Race 1, a Maiden Juvenile Plate for fillies, with Peace Frog.
The Horizon filly was only modest in the Western Cape but showed good improvement in her first start for the yard when runner-up over 1200m on the Polytrack. The drop to 1000m should suit and S'manga Khumalo rides.
But Greeff saddles talented two-year-old filly Three Rocks in Race 6, an FM 74 Handicap over 1000m, and this daughter of Heavenly Blue looks to have a bright future. She has only raced three times, finishing second on debut before reeling off two facile wins, including a victory against her elders last month.
She had a runaway win over this track and trip in May and should give the Greeff and Richard Fourie team at least one win on the card.
