Silver Darling, winner of last year’s Grade 1 Woolavington 2000 in Durban, was pulled out of the World Sports Betting Variety Club Mile to take her place in Race 4 at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Wednesday.
Trainer Justin Snaith made the move last Friday, two days prior to the running of the Grade 3 feature. Whether there were already doubts about the meeting taking place last Sunday due to inclement weather that may have forced Snaith’s hand or whether he felt this Cape A Stakes over 2000m was just a better option, it certainly turned out to be the right move.
Sunday’s meeting was first postponed to Monday and then called off, with the meeting rescheduled to Monday 1 May.
It is not only that Silver Darling will be better suited to the distance of this race but also because she comes into it as the best weighted runner by at least 7kg. In addition, this is quite a drop in class.
This daughter of Silvano has matured into a classy sort and added further Black Type to her curriculum vitae with placed efforts at Grade 1 level in the Jonsson Workwear Garden Province Stakes at Hollywoodbets Greyville and in both the Majorca Stakes over 1600m and the 1800m Paddock Stakes, both run at this Cape course.
She has not run since those Grade 1 features in January so she could be using this race to prepare for bigger races, most likely in KwaZulu-Natal. However, Snaith does not send out his runners unfit and she should be good enough to win a race of this nature.
She also has the benefit of having Richard Fourie, who has hardly put a foot wrong these days, in the irons. Only six runners are carded to go to post so No 5 draw will not be a problem.
