Jack Milner: Trainer Justin Snaith and jockey Richard Fourie can get punters off to a winning start at Kenilworth on Tuesday.
The pair team up with Gimmethegreenlight colt Shangaan in Race 1, a Maiden Plate over 1200m. He has improved smartly as a three-year-old, finishing third and second respectively in two starts over 1250m at Durbanville this term, and further progress from Snaith’s charge should continue the yard’s winning form.
Fourie, who partnered Shangaan for the first time in his last start, retains the ride and the pair are likely to go one better this time.
Snaith and Fourie look hard to oppose in Race 6, a MR 75 Handicap for fillies and mares over 1600m, where they are represented by well-bred Captain Al filly Really Royal, who is unlucky not to be undefeated after two starts.
As a juvenile she beat winners on debut over 1200m and was rested ahead of her seasonal reappearance when only touched off under 60kg by an older and more-experienced rival in Crawford-trained Capitana, who looks a good bet to win Race 8.
Really Royal, on that evidence and on her pedigree, will relish the step up to 1600m and, with improved fitness on her side, should resume winning ways.
However, in case she struggles with the extra distance on this occasion, it could be wise to include Glen Kotzen-trained In A Huff, who has won over 1400m at this course and should benefit from the extra 200m.
Capitana may have only started her racing career as a four-year-old but Crawford’s charge has quickly made up for lost time, winning twice from four starts.
Anton Marcus has established a good rapport with this filly and he has been booked for the ride again.
