Rose to crackle for Candice

July 2022

Jack Milner

Candice Bass-Robinson has her stable in tremendous form currently and she has clearly decided to make hay while the sun shines.

That could be figurative rather than literal as it is the rainy season in Western Cape right now.

What is interesting is that since 1 June Bass-Robinson has had 17 winners from 83 runners, and the win-rate of 20.48% is the highest for that period in the country. Only Paul Peter and Justin Snaith have had more winners but from a lot more runners.

Bass-Robinson sends out seven runners at Wednesday’s Kenilworth meeting and a number of them top the bookmakers’ boards so one can expect her to extend the number of recent winners.

Perhaps the best of them is Cracklin’ Rose, who comes up in Race 6, a MR 79 Handicap for fillies and mares over 1400m.

This is the only race where Bass-Robinson saddles three runners but looking at weights and current form, this three-year-old daughter of Elusive Fort looks the pick of the trio.

She was runner-up in her last two starts beaten both times by Treasure Hunt. The first time she went down 0.70 lengths and the next 0.20 lengths, both times over this course and distance.

Cracklin’ Rose is a natural frontrunner and this time she has the benefit of jumping from No 1 draw which should enable jockey Keagan de Melo to get to the front quite comfortably.

She also carries a handy weight of 54.5kg.

Bettors should not be too concerned that stable jockey Aldo Domeyer rides Forries Forever as firstly he is unable to make the weight on Cracklin’ Rose and secondly De Melo was aboard the filly last time.

However, they do look likely to finish first and second in this line-up and it could be worth taking some Exactas.
