The South African horse racing fraternity is in mourning after the passing of multiple East Cape Champion trainer Gavin Smith (59) on Sunday, 19 October 2025 after a battle with cancer.
A lifelong horseman, Gavin started riding work at the age of 11, taking out his license in 1996, after taking over from his late dad Andy. He has consistently been among the top trainers in the Eastern Cape ever since and has handled the likes of Stormy Appeal, Shoes Of Silver, Bold Silvano, In A Rush and Muscatt and more recently, fan favourites such as Cherry Ano and Cruise Control.
But more than that, Smith was regarded as one of the best trainers in the country. He recently achieved a milestone 3,000 career wins and was one of just three trainers nationwide to surpass 100 wins for the 2024/25 season. However, he will best be remembered as one of the true gentlemen of the sport.
Gavin is survived by his wife Marilyn, son Dean and daughter Abbi van der Merwe.
Our deepest condolences to all who will feel his passing.
RIP Gavin Dean Smith. 6 July 1966 - 19 October 2025.
