Regent to rule in the Cape

February 2023

Jack Milner

Bettors will be faced with a competitive card at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Wednesday but hopefully they can rely on the combination of trainer Glen Kotzen and jockey Keagan de Melo to provide them with a banker for the exotics.

Race 7 is the Newlands Stakes (Non-Black Type) for three-year-olds over 1400m and Kotzen sends out King Regent who looks to have a decent future.

The Dynasty gelding has only run four times, winning his first two starts before running a 1.25-length second behind Without Question in his first attempt at 1600m.

This gelding then caught the eye when a fast-finishing fourth in the R7.5-million World Sports Betting Gold Rush over 1400m on Cape Met day.

He made up a lot of ground from the rear of the field to cross the line just 1.75 lengths behind Cape Guineas fourth-placed Royal Aussie.

That effort earned Kotzen's charge a 15-point penalty, which will see him carry top weight of 60kg so he will have to concede weight to all. However, that is unlikely to prevent progressive King Regent from returning to winning ways, especially as he jumps from No 1 draw.

The decent run did not come as surprise to his connections as he was well backed to win that race, shortening from 20-1 in early betting to go off at 7-2.

He did get a bit lost early in that race and was some 12 lengths back at the 800m mark. That was in a 15-horse field but as there are just 10 runners in this race De Melo, who will be riding King Regent for the first time, is unlikely to end up that far back.

He could be looking for further as he is a full brother to Crimson King, winner of the Grade 3 Pocket Power Stakes over 2400m in 2021.
