Jack Milner: After a long run on the Polytrack, the new year at Fairview will also usher in a return to the turf.
To celebrate the occasion, an assemblage of Western Cape trainers will be descending on Port Elizabeth on Friday, which sees the running of the Listed Lady’s Bracelet over 1600m.
Candice Bass-Robinson and Justin Snaith have sent horses and their runners look likely to fight out the finish.
In addition, Mike Stewart looked to have the leading contender in Helen’s Ideal.
Unfortunately, the five-year-old mare will not be taking her place in the field due to transport problems.
So that leaves the door open for Snaith and Bass Robinson to fight this one out.
Snaith’s runners perform well at this course so Sovereign Secret has to be respected. This Dynasty filly does find winning a tough task and only has the one victory to her name.
Lyle Hewitson has bee taking rides for the Snaith stable all over the country and their recent record is quite impressive. He has had nine rides for two wins, three seconds and two fourth, and he will be looking to up that good percentage board Sovereign Secret.
Bass-Robinson is represented by Gimme Gimme Gimme and although this is a stronger race than some of her recent starts, she is capable of a good finish when in the mood and will be doing her best work late.
Aldo Domeyer is in town and takes most of the Bass-Robinson rides.
Local champion trainer Alan Greeff sends out five runners and the best of his could be Wallis Simpson, especially as Greg Cheyne is up and he usually gets the pick of the rides from the stable.
Of the other Greeff runners, Calandra showed her rivals a clean pair of heels last time out but that was over 2000m on the Polytrack and this does look a tougher race. However, she must be considered.
Bass Robinson also has Cruise Along in the line-up but this five-year-old Crusade mare will need to improve to feature. Marco van Rensburg takes the ride.
Whatever the fate of those runners Greeff looks to have the best bet in the card in Race 4 where he saddles Golden Chance. She ran third on her local debut and will be fitter this time.
