With the official start of the KwaZulu-Natal just one month away, trainers from other provinces have started their raids as they prepare their better horses.
So, there are a number visiting trainer at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on Monday and all of Justin Snaith, Johan Janse van Vuuren and Corne Spies are expected to have winners at the meeting.
The best of Snaith’s runners could be Lightning Glow in Race 5, a MR 86 Handicap over 1950m.
The gelding has won two of his five starts but is unbeaten in two starts since gelding.
The son of Vercingetorix has improved with each run and with every step up in distance.
This three-year-old was placed in his first three starts which were sprints and then gelded in November 2023.
Returning from a break saw Lightning Glow beat Mr Belvedere over the Hollywoodbets Kenilworth 1600m on 13 January.
Stepped up to 1800m for his fifth start saw another win at Kenilworth on 3 March.
In both of his wins Grant van Niekerk was the jockey aboard but Richard Fourie will be aboard him this time round. It is worth noting that Fourie was on Lightning Glow when third on debut.
Jockey Gavin Lerena rides filly Nettleton in Race 4 and the Janse van Vuuren-trained filly could prove a bit better than her rivals over 1000m.
She has won three of her last five starts and found only one better on the day when runner-up to Law Of Success last time out.
Lerena knows the filly well and will give her every chance for victory.
Spies sends out We Will Rock You in Race 2, a Maiden Plate over 1200m for fillies and mares, and this two-year-old daughter of Oratorio will be looking to notch up a win on open company.
She ran a cracker on debut when a 1.30-length fifth behind Pinatubo over 1000m on the Turffontein Inside track but produced the fastest 400m to finish. She will love the extra 200m this time and looks the best bet on the card.
Marco van Rensburg rides.
