Quebecois can crack Chepstow code

October 2024

Quebecois is an exciting prospect for Paul Nicholls this season and he is taken to get off to a winning start in division two of the Colourfence Newport Long Life Garden Railings Maiden Hurdle at Chepstow on Tuesday.

Plenty has been made of Nicholls making a slower than usual start to the season, but he is still operating at a decent strike-rate for this time of year.

Nicholls has been at pains to point out you win no awards for having them cherry-ripe this early in the campaign, but Quebecois is likely to be forward enough to win.

He created a huge impression when winning at Exeter in December, setting up a tilt at the Champion Bumper.

He failed to cut much ice in that event, but very few trained in the UK did, with the first domestic runner home finishing eighth.

Nicholls tends to send his brighter prospects to this Monmouthshire track and there will be some long faces if he is beaten.

The Ditcheat maestro also has an exciting recruit from the pointing field to run in the first division of the extended 3800m event in the form of £255,000 purchase Belliano.

A six-length winner between the flags at Boulta before commanding that hefty fee, he could have a bright future under rules, with the second and third on that occasion also bringing the hammer down for sizeable amounts when selling since.

South Glamorgan trainer Sam Thomas has started in flying form and Range can give him another winner in the Colourfence Newport Low Maintenance Fencing Handicap Chase.

The seven-year-old was a course and distance winner in December, but Thomas' string were not quite in peak health in the second half of last season.

The complete opposite is true now, and everything Thomas runs at present is worth consideration.

One of the biggest success stories in recent years has been the teaming up of Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero, who are growing the quality of their string all the time.

Coppernic Du Mazet has failed to get his head in front in one bumper and three runs over hurdles, but he has not even turned five yet.

There is every chance he will have strengthened up plenty over the summer, meaning he is of interest in the Wrexham Business and Community Awards Charities Handicap Chase at Bangor-On-Dee.

Welsh native Rebecca Curtis has started the season well and could strike on home soil with Valens Bruyee, who ended the last campaign on a winning note.

Up 7-points for winning by a neck is harsh enough, but he has more potential than most on his chasing debut in the Weatherbys Stallion Book Novices' Handicap Chase.

Grant Tuer's Farandaway has not been seen since chasing home Bob Mali at Ayr in August and that one ran in the Horris Hill on Saturday.

Gelded since, he had also finished second on his debut at Newcastle so should take all the beating in the British Stallion Studs EBF Restricted Maiden Stakes at Catterick.

Homer Stokes arrives for the racingtv.com Handicap on the crest of a wave, looking for a fourth win in five starts.

His last four outings have all been exclusively at Catterick so he clearly loves it there, and as he only won by a neck last time out, he has only been put up 2-points.

John and Thady Gosden's El Zoud, a Kingman colt, created a big impression when winning two weeks ago at Kempton.

That came after almost a year off, so there is obviously the possibility he could bounce, but he looks capable of defying a penalty otherwise in the Gamble Responsibly At BetMGM Novice Stakes at Newcastle. - Press Association
