Quantum Theory is one of those horses who would be lovely to own in that almost every time he runs, he brings in a cheque.
This four-year-old son of Querari has only raced 10 times but has notched two win, five seconds, one third and one fourth. His only unplaced effort came in the Man O’ War Sprint and he had excuses on that occasion.
The Robbie Sage-trained runner was finally gelded in April and his two runs since have produced a fourth place over 1160m and a second place behind Grade 2 World Sports Betting Gauteng Guineas winner Eye Of The Prophet in a Pinnacle Stakes over 1450m on the Inside track at Turffontein.
Jockey Muzi Yeni admitted he was slightly disappointed with that sprint run but added they were trying him with a tongue tie for his next start in the hope it would bring him back to his best form.
There was some decent betting support for the gelding in his second start and the fact he was beaten just 0.75 lengths by Eye Of The Prophet who has run well in other graded races, indicates Quantum Theory is coming back to his best.
He lines up again in Race 8, a Pinnacle Stakes over 1500m, at the same course on Saturday with Yeni aboard and this being his third run after having been gelded, should produce a winning performance.
While he is not the best weighted runner, he is just 1kg off that position which is held jointly by four runners – Taikonaut, Danilo Danilovitch, Cabinet Shuffle and Team Gold.
However, both Taikonaut and Danilo Danilovitch have been campaigning over shorter and are not sure to see out the trip while Team Gold is held on form by Quantum Theory.
Tizona has done well since joining Tony Peter’s yard in February. He has won twice but has found one too good in his last four starts. He will jump from No 2 draw this time and with just 52kg on his back it will not come as a surprise if apprentice Kaiden Brewer jumps to the front from the off and attempt to steal the race at the top of the straight, a tactic that tends to work well on this course.
Cabinet Shuffle must be seen as a danger as he has won both his starts over the course and distance. However, those races were against much weaker and more recently he, too, has been campaigning in sprints.
In fact, his last race was in the Grade 1 Mercury Sprint over 1200m at Hollywoodbets Greyville last month in which he ran seventh. Although he received a 2kg penalty for that performance it does not reflect in a stakes race and he meets Quantum Theory at level weights.
Of the “sprinting brigade” Danilo Danilovitch might be the one to keep an eye on as he ran a decent fourth behind Eye Of The Prophet. However, he was beaten by both Quantum Theory and Team Gold and is now 2kg worse off, so he is unlikely to turn the tables, although he does have the benefit of jumping from No 1 draw.
Another runner to consider is Running Rifles who has two wins and a second since joining the Peter yard but he is quite badly out at the weights under these race conditions.
