Prince to rule in Mercury Sprint

July 2023

With both a Pick 6 and Jackpot One carryover at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday most bettors will be looking for a decent banker.

There are a couple of options but the standout bet on the card comes up in Race 6, the Grade 1 Mercury Sprint over 1200m, in the form of Gimme A Prince.

This Dean Kannemeyer-trained son of Gimmethegreenlight can lay claims to being the best sprinter in the country right now. This four-year-old gelding has only raced 10 times for six wins and three seconds and included in those wins are already two Grade 1 races.

He has a devastating turn of foot which saw him come from an almost impossible position in the Golden Horse Sprint at Hollywoodbets Scottsville last month to win going away, jockey Keagan de Melo even able to stop riding him prior to the line.

He has only had one run on this track and that was in the Grade 2 Drill Hall Stakes over 1400m. He had a shocking draw, ended up way back, was then carried out wide, but still produced his characteristic finish to go down just 0.75 lengths to Trip OF Fortune.

This time he jumps from No 4 draw, is one of the two best weighted runners and will be very hard to stop.

“We go into this race well-drawn,” Kannemeyer told

“He galloped on Thursday (20 July 2023) and he put up an exceptionally good gallop. He’s got to be a big runner.”

Sean Tarry sends out unbeaten Lucky Lad in the Grade 1 World Pool Moment Of The Day Champion Stakes for two-year-olds over 1600m and it would be a massive display if he were to win.

He is trying 1600m for the first time, it is his first run around the turn and he has landed No 13 draw, which is not great at this course.

But this Gimmethegreenlight colt looks to be exceptional and he could very well sweep aside all those hurdles.

He is helped, however, by the fact that one of his main threats, Sandringham Summit, is drawn even wider.

The final Grade 1 race on the card comes up in Race 9, the Douglas Whyte Stakes for two-year-old fillies over 1600m, and this looks wide open.

But the value could lie with Secret Identity who looked a terribly unlucky loser last time over 1300m and will benefit from the extra 300m. Gavin Lerena takes the ride for Michelle Rix and Harold Crawford.
