Prince Of Fire just has to finish in the top six in the third and final leg to secure the consolation bonus for his connections in the Nelson Mandela Bay Racing Poly Challenge. He nearly won the second leg over 1400m this past Friday on the Fairview Polytrack when he finished second. A win would have kept the Gimmethegreenlight gelding's chances alive to win all three legs for a bonus of R250 000.
The consolation of R50 000 will be paid to the connections of the best performing horse (according to a points system) in the Challenge. To qualify a horse must participate in all three legs and win at least one leg. Narcos (Montana Turner) was the winner of the second leg but did not run in the first, leaving Prince Of Fire (Kelly Mitchley), Gallic Tribe (Jacques Strydom) and Port Louis (Alan Greeff) as the only horses still in the running.
Gallic Tribe or Port Louis can get on even points with a victory in the third leg but then Prince Of Fire must finish out of the top six. If Gallic Tribe or Port Louis doesn’t win, the consolation bonus will go to Prince Of Fire even if he misses the top six.
Prince Of Fire has 16 points and the other two contenders got 6 points each from the first two legs.
Points allocation for bonus: 1st 10, 2nd 6, 3rd 4, 4th 3, 5th 2 and 6th 1.
The final leg will be run over 1600m on October 20th.
