Nowhere to Hyde for Southwell rivals

March 2025

Fergal O'Brien's Jack Hyde can continue in winning form in the Play At The Races Stableduel Novices' Hurdle at Southwell on Monday.

The seven-year-old is a new recruit to the yard this season having previously been trained in Ireland by Thomas Gallagher, for whom he signed off by winning a Newcastle bumper in November 2023.

He made his hurdling debut for new connections on Boxing Day at Kempton and was fourth in a 3200m maiden, after which he was third behind Nicky Henderson's high-profile E1.4million purchase Palladium at Huntingdon in January.

Palladium's Cheltenham Festival bid was scuppered when he got cast in his box and he has therefore been unable to boost the form, but other contenders in the race have done plenty of that on his behalf since.

Ben Pauling's Wolf Moon, the runner-up, was won since, and so too has the fourth-placed Karton Plein and the seventh-placed Taxus Baccata.

The race was clearly a decent contest in hindsight and Jack Hyde himself has gone on to be a winner, taking a 3200m Southwell event by 3 lengths next time out.

He returns to the same track to step up to 4100m, but with a narrowly-beaten 4800m point-to-point start on his record he should be well able to manage the extended trip and looks the horse to beat with Tom Broughton's 5lb claim reducing the penalty he carries for his prior success.

Gary and Josh Moore's Le Galli Bier can get off the mark on British soil in the Birchwood Kia - Chichester, Driven By You Maiden Hurdle at Fontwell.

The four-year-old gained plenty of experience for previous connections in France, running creditably in three hurdles and three chases without winning.

He made his debut for his new stable at this track last month and came home the runner-up over a trip just in excess of 3400m.

He now steps back up to take on 400m extra and should be suited by the extra test of stamina, with Freddie Mitchell's 5lb claim again a useful asset and he also has the four-year-old allowance.

The Moores could also enjoy success in the concluding Free Tips Daily On attheraces.com Open National Hunt Flat Race, in which they saddle the grey gelding Edward Sexton.

Second by just a neck on his bumper debut last November, the five-year-old was then third in a Kempton contest over the same 3200m trip next time out.

He was staying on, however, and looks poised to come on for the run ahead of his third start in the bumper sphere.

At Wolverhampton, Kingdom Of Time can get his head in front in the Odds Guaranteed At BetMGM Handicap.

Archie Watson's four-year-old has been the runner-up the last twice, missing out by narrow margins in 1600m Southwell handicaps.

His rise in rating has only been incremental and he can make it third time lucky at Wolverhampton. - Press Association
