New day to dawn again

September 2022

Jack Milner

After a disappointing penultimate start Dawnofanewday turned it all around last time to run out a facile winner of his next outing.

Two runs back Dean Kannemeyer’s charge was backed into 9-10 to capture her race over 1600m at Hollywoodbets Scottsville, but after looking a winner going through the 200m mark, she was snared on the line by Bingin Beach.

Last time the four-year-old Futura filly ran in a similar field over the same distance at Hollywoodbets Greyville and this time went off at 4-10, but on this occasion once she hit the front with 300m to run there was nobody to catch her. She raced clear of her opponents to beat Gardenia by 2.40 lengths.

The main difference between the two performances is that the last race was on the Polytrack.

On Monday Dawnofanewday returns to the Polytrack to contest Race 7, a MR 80 Handicap for fillies and mares over 1600m, and she is a confident selection to notch up another victory.

She will be meeting Bingin Beach again and will be 0.5kg worse off but the surface should hold the key to this race. A glance at a previous run on the Polytrack by Dawnofanewday, the first of her career, saw her go down a short head to Top Me Up Holly.

That was also her first run in KwaZulu-Natal and she was reported to be blowing after that race, so was probably in need of the outing.

Keagan de Melo has had a superb start to the season and, at the time of writing, has amassed 30 winners already. He will be aboard Dawnofanewday again.

Shape Of You and Bingin Beach look the runners to follow her home and they will be ridden by Ant Mgudlwa and S’manga Khumalo respectively.

There are some other decent bets on this card.

Well-named Cantfoolme, who runs in Race 2, a Maiden Plate for fillies and mares over 1600m, wasn’t all that impressive on debut.

But it must be remembered she hadn’t yet celebrated her third birthday and wasn’t given the easiest of tasks running on the Polytrack over 1400m in her first visit to a racecourse. That did not stop a decent flow of betting support coming for this daughter of Philanthropist who is related to Graded-race winners Silver Host and Lanner Falcon.

She only got going in the dying stages and as such, looks ideally suited to the additional 200m this time.

Living Waters, who lines up in Race 4, a MR 64 Handicap over 1900m, takes on some of the horses who beat him last time but has the ability to turn that result around. Tienie Prinsloo’s runner has battled to get it right again after winning two in close succession almost a year ago, but it has been a while since he took on a field with an average merit rating of just 56.

Lucretius beat him soundly, but the latter has gone up six points and is 3kg worse off. He is also not the most reliable runner around although he did improve in cheekpieces last time. So, Living Waters may not only be worth a decent each-way bet, but it could mean one could go light in this leg of an exotic bet like the Pick 6.

Perhaps just Living Waters, Lucretius and Lord Minver, who split the pair last time, need to be included.
