Mozart to give Candice ‘eine kleine’ Durbanville win

October 2020

Jack Milner: Candice Bass-Robinson can spoil the party for Andre Nel in Race 6 at Durbanville, a Pinnacle Stakes over 2000m.

Only seven runners are carded to go to post and five of those are trained by Nel. That number has now been reduced to three with the scratching of Vikram and Run Red, but the balance of his entourage might have to get in line behind Majestic Mozart, trained by Bass-Robinson.

Majestic Mozart travelled to KwaZulu-Natal for the season and was considered an optimistic entry in the Grade 1 Champions Cup over 1800m at Greyville. Despite that he did well enough, finishing sixth, but just 2.05 lengths by Golden Ducat, to whom he conceded 1kg.

Another 1.10 lengths behind came Crown Towers who franked the form at Greyville yesterday with a comfortable victory in the Listed Michaelmas Handicap over 1900m.

Majestic Mozart made an impact in his first run back in the Cape with a 1.25-length fourth behind Kasimir on his Cape return in the Grade 3 Matchem Stakes over 1400m at Durbanville.

This distance is more to his liking and it is worth noting Greg Cheyne has stuck with the five-year-old son of Dynasty, who is out of Sound The Flute. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote an opera called the Magic Flute, while one of his most famous pieces of music is called Eine Kleine Nachtmusik which literally translates as “a little night music”.

Top-weight Kampala Campari spearheads Nel’s five-pronged attack and should attract plenty betting interest as the best-weighted runner by at least 2kg. He has run twice over 1400m at this level recently for a third and fourth-place finish, and the step up to 2000m in his third run after a rest, should bring about improvement.

Aldo Domeyer takes the ride but this well-performed seven-year-old might well be the class act in the line-up but will probably have bigger targets on his agenda later this Cape Summer season.

As a result, a slight preference is for stable companion Silver De Lange, who is distance suited. While he may have a bit to find on official ratings, this honest Silvano gelding does deserve to have his consistency rewarded. He will be at peak fitness and, under just 50kg with in-form apprentice Joshwin Solomons taking 2.5kg off the back, his followers can expect a bold performance.

Silver De Lange carried 52kg when finishing third in a Listed race over the course and distance of Tuesday’s contest so the drop in class with less weight on his back should stand him in good stead.

Capable stable companion Crome Yellow has 2.55 lengths to find on that meeting but is just 1kg better off so is unlikely to turn the tables on these terms.

Magnificent Seven, trained by Justin Snaith, could be in need of his Cape season pipe-opener, as he returns to the Western Cape following a visit to KwaZulu-Natal for their summer season.

And connections may be tempted by bigger prizes over staying distances for this seven-time winning six-year-old son of Horse Chestnut.
