Modern News can make headlines at Windsor

Modern News can make all the headlines in Windsor's Listed Fitzdares Royal Windsor Stakes.

The gelded son of Shamardal was a three-times winner in handicap company during his three-year-old season and having made the podium at Listed level in Meydan during the winter, returns to that grade having been successful once again in the handicap ranks last time.

Although only able to finish seventh when sent off 5-1 for the Lincoln in March, Charlie Appleby's four-year-old bounced back in style to win Newbury's Spring Cup.

Fast ground suited him well on that occasion and with conditions set to be lightning quick here, there are plenty of signs pointing Modern News' way for this one-mile (1600m) contest, with the Appleby team continuing to operate at nearly 40 per cent.

David Evans' Radio Goo Goo can send punters gaga when she attempts to open her account at the third attempt in Windsor's Springboard/EBF Fillies' Novice Stakes.

Having started her career with an encouraging fourth in a smart looking maiden at Newmarket, she was sent off the 2-1 favourite for a novice event at Nottingham 13 days ago. Despite producing another fine effort, she was unable to reverse HQ form with the winner Lost Angel and having disputed the lead for the majority of the contest, faded into third in the closing stages.

The winner of that Colwick Park contest, along with the runner-up, have been mentioned as potential Royal Ascot fillies and that gives plenty of encouragement that this daughter of Havana Grey will be in the winner's enclosure before too long. William Buick takes over in the saddle and her experience will make her tough to beat in receipt of 6lb from Salisbury scorer Katey Kontent.

Elsewhere at the Berkshire track, Godolphin's Tomouh could appreciate the drop back to six furlongs (1200m) in the Fitzdares Sprint Series Fillies' Handicap, while Crystal Delight caught the eye when third on debut at Leicester and could take a huge step forward now in the Berry Gardens 50th Anniversary Restricted Novice Stakes.

It could be wise to stick with Melton Mowbray handler Laura Morgan as she sends four runners to Southwell. Morgan has saddled more winners at the Nottinghamshire track than any other course and can be on the scoresheet here with Percussion in the N&L Franklin Developments Ltd Handicap Chase.

The seven-year-old was an easy 15-length winner at this venue last month and having proven to be versatile in terms of both distance and ground, can handle both a 9lb rise and a return to three miles (4800m).

Clear The Runway was a 15-length scorer over fences for Morgan on the same card as Percussion last month and is another that has a fine chance of backing that effort up, reverting to the smaller obstacles in the N&L Franklin Developments Ltd Novices' Hurdle.

However, her My Portia may have to settle for a supporting role in the 28th And 29th May Antiques Fair Mares' Open Maiden National Hunt Flat Race as the bumper looks set to go to Nicky Henderson and his stable debutant Treyarnon Bay.

The filly was sent off favourite for her racecourse bow when trained by Joseph Tuite and following an encouraging performance to finish second, was snapped up by current connections. It would be no surprise to see the four-year-old open her account.

Fragrance could come out smelling of roses in Catterick's EBF Maiden Fillies' Stakes if putting her experience to good use. She has been highly tried so far, but this looks much calmer waters for the daughter of Oasis Dream. - Press Association
