Marshall-trained Gainsford due a change of fortune
July 2021
Jack Milner: Luck has not favoured Gainsford in his last few runs so trainer Vaughan Marshall’s charge deserves a change of fortune when he lines up in Race 6 at Scottsville on Sunday, a MR 102 Handicap over 1200m.
In his last three starts he has either suffered interference, lost ground at the start or was rolled out during the running. However, in all three cases he regained his stride and ran on strongly.
In his last outing, the Grade 2 Post Merchants over 1200m at Greyville, he had a double dose of misfortune in that he was slowly out of the stalls and then got rolled out. Nevertheless, he finished well to end up a 1.40-lengths fourth behind Kasimir.
He stakes a drop in class in this event and hopefully he can finally be able to make this winter trip to KwaZulu-Natal from the Western Cape worthwhile.
There is a change of jockey this time in that Sean Veale will take the ride.
Bettors could build up a kitty for the day in Race 1, a Maiden Juvenile Plate over 1750m.
After two decent sprint efforts, promising Illicit Kiss showed up nicely in a quality sales race over 1300m and the Master Of My Fate gelding gave the impression this longer trip will be ideal.
Keagan de Melo will take the ride for the Glen Kotzen stable.
Jack Milner’s selections
