Lowry's looks Picture Perfect

December 2023

By Nick Robson

Lowry’s Bar can win for the third time this season in the TrustATrader You Can Trust Our Traders Handicap Hurdle at Wincanton.

Trained by Philip Hobbs and Johnson White, he was second in his only point-to-point before winning here on his hurdling debut.

The horse he beat there came out and won next time out and ran respectably at Cheltenham on Friday and Lowry’s Bar had little trouble in defying a penalty at Chepstow.

An opening handicap mark of 120 seems pretty lenient and he gets the nap vote.

Marsh Wren jumped with aplomb on her chasing debut and can take the Lady Godiva Mares’ Novices’ Chase on just her second outing over fences.

Stuart Edmunds’ seven-year-old is lightly-raced and there is surely more to come from her.

She won her only bumper and four of her eight races over hurdles before being sent chasing this term and looked a natural at Warwick on her debut last month.

There is a slight concern that she has never put two good runs together, but the argument that she is only best when fresh does not hold much water given she came back from a 50-day break last February, was well beaten but then won her next outing.

The big danger is Nicky Henderson’s Arclight, who has impressed in two runs over fences but two and a half miles on soft ground might not be what she wants as a four-year-old.

Dragon Rock has to be of interest for Shark Hanlon in the Download Raceday Ready Today Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle at Catterick.

The popular trainer is a regular visitor to UK tracks, and he may have a live outsider in Hewick in the King George on Boxing Day, but those aspirations can wait for now.

An easy winner at Fairyhouse when last seen, he looks the perfect conveyance for Hanlon’s teenage son Paddy to gain some valuable experience.

Teorie won a 10-furlong Leopardstown maiden for Jim Bolger, after which he earned a rating of 81.

As juvenile prospects go these days that looks above average and he could be a shrewd purchase for Max McNeill, who sent him into training with Fergal O’Brien.

His new connections will be watching the Hillcrest Home Care Juvenile Hurdle with interest.

The Venetia Williams-trained Eceparti must have a great chance of bringing up a hat-trick in the Sky Bet Stayers’ Handicap Chase at Fakenham.

Williams’ horses continue to be in rude health and this nine-year-old has stamina to burn which will suit in this marathon contest.

There could also be success for Nigel Twiston-Davies’ Sergeant Wilson who was a course-and-distance winner off 2lb higher earlier in the year and had the misfortune of bumping into the progressive Brentford Hope when second at Newbury last time.

He competes off the same mark of 110 in this easier looking event and could get a handy tow round from Olly Murphy’s forward-going For Pleasure in the Betting Better With Sky Bet Handicap Hurdle.

On the all-weather at Wolverhampton, Arabian Tribe appears a newcomer to keep a very close eye on in the Boost Your Acca At Betmgm EBF Maiden Stakes.

Trained by Charlie Appleby, the son of Dubawi cost 750,000 guineas as a yearling and is a half-brother to multiple Group One scorer Barney Roy.
