Levana to show spirit in the Cape

Wednesday’s racemeeting at Hollywoodbets Durbanville could see big rating dropper Spirit Of Levana finally back in the winner’s circle.

The Glen Kotzen-trained filly was highly regarded as a youngster. She beat Parisian Walkway, who went on to capture the Grade 2 Gauteng Guineas later that season.

Spirit Of Levana confirmed a high 96 merit rating, finishing 5th in a Grade 1 straight after winning two in a row, but has had her fair share of issues since. A few runs back, however, she finished third to Hollywoodbets Durban July entry Regulation where she gave signs that she may coming back to form.

She subsequently dropped 6kg in equivalent ratings to a low mark of 70 and must be able to get her turn back in the sun again soon. Last time out when switching to Durbanville in a C Stakes event she looked to be making all the right moves before getting hampered at a crucial stage. She could have been in the fight for the win in what was a strong field.

She takes a drop-in class in Race 8, an Apprentice Class 5 Handicap over 1600m, and this time she could find the passage to win and win well.

All the runners will be ridden by apprentices and Bavish Soodoo will take 2.5kg off her back.

Justin Snaith could start the day off with a bang as his filly in Race 1, Enticement, looks to be one of the top bets on the card. The well-bred daughter of Erik The Red caught the eye as one with much more to come after showing good speed before finding Candice Bass’ highly rated Grapes Of Wrath one better.

The latter is a half-sister to champion Charles Dickens and she too could be an exciting sort in the making.
