Lattam to bounce back on return to Goodwood

September 2023

By Anita Chambers, PA

Lattam can put an unlucky recent run behind him in the William Hill Handicap at Goodwood.

Trained by William Haggas, the four-year-old lined up in the ultra-competitive Golden Mile at this track last month as the 5-1 favourite having won on his previous start at Newcastle.

However, he finished down the field, beaten nine lengths in 15th place, although the bare statistics possibly do not do justice to his effort as Lattam did not enjoy an ideal run.

He missed the break and then ran a bit keen before finding his passage blocked at a crucial stage, so that performance can be upgraded a little.

On an unchanged mark of 95, Lattam will also have conditions to his liking here.

Stablemate My Prospero should be winning the Listed Foundation Stakes judged on the ratings.

His perch of 119 puts him well ahead of his rivals in this 10-furlong contest, but the assessor has actually dropped his mark slightly after a surprise defeat in the York Stakes on his latest start.

Beaten a half-length by Alflaila on the Knavesmire on good ground, his two best career efforts have come on easier conditions, so it might pay to keep the faith a little longer.

Karl Burke boasts an exceptional record with his juveniles this term and Local Arms can claim another nice prize for him in the British EBF £100,000 2YO Fillies’ Series Final.

While this Saxon Warrior filly is clearly not on a par with the stable’s division stars Darnation and Fallen Angel, there was much to like about her eight-length demolition job at Beverley last week.

The form may not be much to write home about, but the manner of her success was eyecatching and she looked capable of plenty more.

It is a big week for the Ralph Beckett team with Westover primed to shoot for Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe gold – and Albany can give them a nice confidence boost at a lower level in the Heineken Fillies’ Handicap.

A stylish winner over 10 furlongs at Windsor, she jumps up to a mile and six furlongs here, but she certainly has the pedigree for a stamina test.

Casilli has dropped to an attractive mark ahead of the Weatherbys Digital Solutions Handicap at Redcar.

A winner off 78 at Beverley last term, the six-year-old then spent the best part of a year off the track and has struggled to really regain her sparkle since.

She has duly dropped from a starting mark of 82 to her current perch of 73 and having posted marginally improved efforts of late, she could just be coming right.

Humanity can thrive from an opening mark of 82 in the Unibet More Extra Place Races Handicap at Kempton.

Beaten a length by Group-placed runner Chesspiece on his only juvenile start, he underwent wind surgery in the spring with his comeback was delayed until August, when he proved very disappointing as an odds-on favourite.

The son of Roaring Lion likely needed the run though as stepped up to 12 furlongs the next time, he made all for a cosy success in a novice heat which bodes well for this race.

Wasdell Dundalk can snap Born Famous’ winning run in the Paul Ferguson’s Jumpers To Follow David Whitaker Handicap Chase at Perth.

Born Famous has won her last six starts but preference is for Lisa Harrison’s charge, who is himself on a hat-trick here.

Those two wins have each come at Perth and while he is now on a mark of 109 having won off 97 on the first occasion, he is still well treated on the best of his form.
