Lass to beat the boys at Fairview

July 2024

Jack Milner

There are just three race days left to be staged at Fairview this season and over the past couple of meetings Alan Greeff has managed to widen the gap between himself and Gavin Smith to eight winners.

Once again, they both have some decent runners at Fairview today when they race on the Polytrack and punters do face another tough card. Here are some horses carded who ran at Tuesday’s meeting but at the time of writing none of them have been withdrawn from Friday’s meeting.

Finding a best bet on this card is not easy but it could be worth taking a chance with Smith-trained Paris Lass in Race 7, a MR 96 Handicap over 1000m.

The three-year-old daughter of Visionaire has an excellent record over this course and distance with three wins from four runs. Last time out she was particularly impressive when getting the better of talented Three Rocks by 0.75 lengths.

Her only two unplaced runs over 1000m was when she finished a close-up fifth and in one case, was only beaten 0.90 lengths.

Paris Lass does take on the boys and has been allotted top weight of 63kg, but Smith has engaged useful apprentice Nirvan Nastili and he will take 4kg off her back.

There could be value in a Greeff-trained filly who has did well earlier in the season in Can't Say No. She had a tough draw to deal with last time out and never got a blow-in behind impressive stable companion Call To Glory.

The two-year-old filly was also reported to be coughing that day so clearly the run is best expected.

Can't Say No impressed when winning back-to-back races in April and May, and now drawn in pole position she is worth an each-way bet in Race 6, a MR 66 Handicap for fillies and mares over 1600m.
