Former jockey Mark Khan had a flying start to his training career when he scooped first prize with Sea Shanty, the very first runner he saddled.
That was at the beginning of March, and in the meantime the trainer has added two more winners to his tally with Kashkaval and His Master’s Voice.
Today at the Vaal, Kittyboys Girl could secure a fourth visit to the winner’s enclosure for Khan when she lines up in Race 5, a FM66 Handicap over 1600m.
This four-year-old daughter has had two runs for her new stable and has come along very nicely.
Her last-start third, beaten just 0.6-lengths by Count Your Chances, was her best performance in more than a year, and it seems that Khan is testing her over slightly further again at just the right time in her career.
She placed in both her two runs over 1600m in Durban as a three-year-old, but now more mature she should relish the longer distance and score a second career win.
His Master’s Voice will also be in action today.
Despite a disappointing last outing when running sixth in a field of eight, 4.75-lengths behind Volte Face, Khan believes his runner is in with a chance again today in Race 4, a MR68 Handicap over 1800m.
“His last run was disappointing, and the draw is a cause for concern, but he’s definitely in with a chance,” said Khan yesterday. His Master’s Voice will be jumping from gate 9 in a 12-horse race.
It must be noted that His Master’s Voice was not aided last time out by the fact that jockey Tshepiso Matsoele dropped his crop 200m from the finish line. Up until then His Master’s Voice was sitting well-positioned, so that run is probably best ignored.
