Kelpie Grey poised for another Ayr raid

July 2025

Kelpie Grey looks well placed to provide Jim Goldie with yet another winner at Ayr in the Tennent's Lager Handicap on Monday.

The Lanarkshire-based trainer has saddled over 300 winners at the west Scotland venue on the Flat and over jumps combined, significantly more than any other course in Britain.

Kelpie Grey himself has shown a liking for the track, winning twice and filling the runner-up spot three times from six visits, and there was plenty of encouragement to be taken from his comeback second here three weeks ago after 10 months off the track.

The five-year-old is only 2lb above his last winning mark and with ease in the ground to suit, he should prove hard to beat.

Hornsea Bay is another previous course winner of major interest in the Outcider Handicap.

The son of New Bay looked a really exciting recruit for David O'Meara and The Horse Watchers after making a successful debut here in September, and he was only narrowly denied under a penalty the following month.

He came up a little short on his first two starts of this season and was subsequently gelded, since when he has finished fourth in a couple of decent handicaps, most recently suffering significant interference when being delivered with his challenge at Doncaster.

Dropped 1lb to 86, he looks attractively handicapped ahead of this task.

Starlight Time can maintain his unbeaten record in the British Stallion Studs EBF Restricted Novice Stakes at Yarmouth.

Roger Varian's youngster could hardly have been more impressive on his introduction at Epsom in early July, pulling four lengths clear of the chasing pack without being fully extended.

What that form is worth is open to question, with the runner-up Eschweiler well beaten since, but that is not Starlight Time's fault and he is fancied to follow up before potentially having his sights raised in the second half of the season.

Inishfallen has not lived up to his early promise but might be able to make an impact in the Fitzdares Sprint Series Handicap at Windsor.

The four-year-old finished second in the Group Three Solario Stakes a couple of years ago and that result was perhaps a negative in the long run as it saw his rating shoot up from 90 to 102.

He subsequently struggled in Group-race and Listed company, but did round off last season on a positive note when second off a mark of 92 at Yarmouth.

His three efforts so far this term have been nothing to write home about but he has dropped to 88 ahead of his latest assignment, so the assessor has given him a chance. - Press Association
