Kat is out of the bag in Kempton feature

November 2024

Following an odds-on reverse on her seasonal debut, Kateira can reward those who keep the faith in the Racing TV Mares' Hurdle at Kempton.

Dan Skelton's charge has won four times over obstacles and rounded off last season with a career-best performance when landing a competitive handicap at Aintree's Grand National meeting.

On the strength of that form, she was a warm order for her reappearance in the Grade Two bet365 Hurdle at Wetherby three weeks ago, and she was still bang in contention when a bad mistake two flights from the finish put her firmly on the back foot.

In the end, she was beaten just under 5 lengths into third place by the Irish-trained winner Beacon Edge on what was only her second start over 4800m, which may slightly stretch her stamina.

A strong-travelling mare, Kateira should appreciate dropping back to 4200m - and easing in grade to Listed class back against her own sex, she should prove hard to beat.

Ascot's loss can be Kempton's gain in the 'Book Christmas Festival Hospitality Now' Beginners' Chase, with Gidleigh Park expected to play a starring role.

The Chepstow bumper winner won his first three outings over hurdles last term, completing his hat-trick in a Grade Two on Festival Trials Day at Cheltenham in January.

He came up short as a leading fancy for the Albert Bartlett at the Festival in March, but always looked the sort to take his game to another level once sent over the larger obstacles and was initially set to commence his new career at Ascot on Friday, but that option was sidestepped due to unsuitable ground.

With rain around, conditions will hopefully be more in his favour in Sunbury and while Iberico Lord is clearly a threat, Gidleigh Park looks more of a chasing prospect.

The Joe Tizzard-trained Bourbali has an obvious chance in the racingtv.com Handicap Chase.

The Sinndar gelding has won twice and been placed twice from five previous visits to the Sunbury circuit and there was much to like about his winning reappearance from the front here last month.

That form looks sound, with the third-placed Beau Balko winning since, and a 4-point rise for Bourbali might not be enough to stop him following up.

Mr Grey Sky is rated the best bet at Ludlow as he looks to defy top-weight in the D I G Services Hereford Ltd Handicap Chase.

The 10-year-old has a decent record, with two bumper wins, two victories over hurdles and two over fences on his CV.

His trainer Kim Bailey continues in good form and a nine-month absence is not seen as a major issue. - Press Association
