Kannemeyer, Zackey to strike again

February 2024

Jack Milner

Trainer Dean Kannemeyer and jockey Craig Zackey have been having a successful season in the Western Cape and will have enjoyed the victory of Green With Envy in the Grade 1 SplashOut Cape Derby on Saturday.

While not quite in the same league, the duo will be looking to notch up another a victory at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Tuesday when they team up with Pieter Both in Race 3, a Maiden Plate over 1800m on the Polytrack.

This three-year-old son of Potala Palace has improved after having been gelded. He showed true potential in his second run after a rest when a 0.75-length third behind Phutulicious and Future Flo, but that was over 1400m.

He comes into this field as the best weighted runner and he could be even better over the additional 400m this time.

Although he has had one run on the Polytrack one can deduce little from that performance as it came after an almost four-month rest in which he was gelded, and it was over 1200m which is too short. However, it did give him the experience of running on the surface and coupled with the fact he will jump from pole position,

it could be worth making him a banker in all best on what is another very tricky midweek card.

Garth Puller and jockey Richard Fourie make a formidable team and they team up with two runners at this meeting. In Race 4, a MR 86 Handicap for fillies and mares, Petit Verdot has always given the impression she would tries 1800m for the first time and as she has proven her effectiveness on the Polytrack where she has won over 1700m, the extra 100m should not be a concern.

In Race 7 they have improving three-year-old Kaygee’s Delight who could be hard to beat if he takes to the surface.
